what is decent?

define decent? in your eyes it could be an 08 plate corsa.. to myself, this is just another commercial box driven by the masses.

now granted im a sucker for dubs n old skool, so clearly to me 80s/90s golfs appeal to me aswell as bugs, minis etc i love how understated they are when really ull find a mk2 golf to be pretty well built..

thing with old skool etc, theres scene tax, where ppl slap extortionate prices on cars due to ppl thinking they are kool...
lol first thing i thought about last post was a corsa lol, i know im nub at cars i dont pretend to be and i respect others with passion, if youre ever around my area give a toot for me lol

Wouldn't mind an old cosworth or mk1 escort tbh but i can't find any locally and i've only seen one cosworth look alike around in my town which was just an escort built up to look like it but i want the real deal lol going to view it tomorrow so i'll let you know how it goes.

See a cossy i would agree on, they are nice cars and the cossy especially was a classic from day 1.

what does taking some 1 with u gotta do with checking it? i cud take my mum with me to view a car but she wudnt have a clue wot to look for?

i was agreeing with what u said, im a sucker for impulse buys but a few times ive been stung by whats lurking behind the nice exterior, take my quattro, got it for a bargain, drove it for a week n realise it was actualy ****ed!!

Xander.. u like ur expensive classics dont u lol!! best of luck 2nite 2 =)

I would stay well away from a Golf GTI of that age, the bets are that it's been ragged and Golfs of that age were known to be very unreliable, i would not pay that ridiculous price on insurance on something that is probably going to cost you a hell of a lot in repairs. If you want a 1.8 i would go for a Focus, it may got be a GTI but if you start hammering a 1989 car it is going to blow, very reliable and insurance is not bad. Or wait a few years and get yourself a civic type R, had one few weeks back before some1 hit me and writ it off, Lotus exige for next car :)

any rust in the engine bay it's a big no no, and the insurance you said that is a silly price to pay for it, i know you stated you have only been driving a year.... but still i could get insured on a brand new skyline for that.

But if your heart is set on it everyone has their own opinions on cars, i realized that when i see so many smart cars around! Anyway if you need any advise on it m8 i can help out a lot, can tell you exactly what you will need to check on the car, the spots where it may problems but not yet indentified. Nothing worse than buying a car and having the valves jump out due to a faulty fan belt, then costing you £600 to repair, or realize after a few weeks that the tracking is out, unfortunatly cars can look good on the exterior but id rather have a car look crap on the outside and perfect under the hood, cost a lot less to repair.

you telling me a 18/19 year old golf gti is gonna be solid under the bonnet? they are known boy racer cars and unless it was owned by an old lady i would stay clear in my opinion, and a focus is a brill little car, quite pokey and very reliable and cheap to insure........... all the qualities for a young drivers car. But if you can get someone who knows a bit about the engine with you that would be the best idea, germans have never been well known for their reliability in engineering, japanese ftw :)

Are German cars not said to be the most reliable?

And VW been one of the most reliable?

if its been well maintained yes, alot have passed keys with an enthusiast who would have drilled **** loads into an engine rebuild, full respray etc, there are so many tidy mk2's around, yes theres a few ropey ones around and there are a 90's hot hatch im not denying that, but a focus... hardly a comparison in my books.
