    true true but lets first focus on getting the 3dmodel :P you later on apply a texture or draw an uvmap that way you can make sure your model will be 256 :D at least thats what i did (there are numberous ways to do this tho)

    you better start learning 3dmodeling (maya,3dsmax,etc) then model your armour and render it, just you have to do some "trial and error" to have the right renderzoom and directions after that resize the rendered images. (this is simmilar to what i did for my shield.) it is offcourse possible...

    ye there will be a release when all images are made and placements set in file i am using an older version of the svn(dm2) and have coded on that myself for this shield i just duplicated a simple weaponsurface to test the images and set the placements, i will later on complete the shield...
