Cant install an Operating System !

Our mam has tried to Re-install Windows XP on her computer , but everytime it gets to Installing XP it just restarts and doesnt get any further.

Just say she turns it back on it loads straight upto the Installing windowsXP part and doesnt show ( or at least i havent seen it) go through the verifying etc etc, before Going onto Installing Windows XP.

We've tried booting from a CD-ROM , Floppy none seem to work .

Any help would be much appreciated.

What exactly happens, when does it restart, the same spot every time? Why are you reinstalling windows, was there a problem before? Have you got an error message at all? How are you installing it, quick ntfs format?

I think it is the issue, when Win XP crashes when installing something related to internet. You have to disconnect the internet cable from your computer when you are installing Win XP.

Well that was the problem wich i had, and that is how i solved it (before you call ME a noob i'd like to add that i was told this by a m8 who works at the local ISP so im quite sure he aint completely BS'in). I think it crashed when it was installing TCP something, well as i dont remember exactly i can only say something related to the internet i think it was something with TCP/IP or so.

It gets half way through the installing Windows procedure and just retsarts for no apparent reason.

We are re-installing windows because we want a new, formatted version i.e no other old OS files on it, might sound a bit daft..

We get no error messages and we are installing it by CD-ROM ...

Oh and ingel the computer ISNT connected to the net.

Uhh it was a simple question, no need to go protecting yourself with the noob comment... I've never ever had that happened to me with countless installations, hence why I was curious, must be quite rare.

Did it have restarting problems before? When EXACTLY does it restart, at which part of the installation.

You said you didn't have an error message.

So does the computer restart and or does it get a BSOD?

Uhh it was a simple question, no need to go protecting yourself with the noob comment... I've never ever had that happened to me with countless installations, hence why I was curious, must be quite rare.

Sorry im just used at the mod's and err "people with high post count" jumping at me eg farril... so yeah incase you planned to do that:P. Also i think it has to do something with the ISP actually, as the problem was quite a long time ago, i cant remember exactly, but my m8 did say that it has something to do with viruses just getting in your computer if you have the cable connected when installing (as there is no firewall protecting it at that time so that is why it crashes when it installs network devices) least that is wot i think, as for the BSOD, i remember having that aswell (not related to the other part of my post) and the result was that i had go through the part where it converts your HD to NTFS format again. Wich fixed it. This problem seems like the mixture of the both problems i had lol, and yes i know i am a quite problematic person :P.

Soo to put it as a simple question, have you converted your HD to NTFS format?

Im not sure our mam was fiddling about with a scanner and trying to install it , not sure if that's fked it up.

If i did convert my HD how would i un-convert it and find out which one it is i.e NTFS or normal ...?

When you install XP you have 3 basic choices.


fat32 filesystem
ntfs filesystem
leave as


You want to select 'full ntfs format'.

Try that and see what happenes if it gives you an error message again.

thats what im saying as soon as the computer boots up it goes straight to Installing devices not letting me choose what to instal and what not to...

So it's booting from the xp install files off the HDD, not the CD. Boot from the CD.

-_- as ive stated in my first post we/ve tried booting from the CD-ROM, it has 3 options.

- Continue the curretn installation of windows

- Cancel the current installation and install a new version of windows

- Quit the installation without installing windows

None of them work.

Is this some kind of OEM disc from some company?
