I'm just going along with what the headline says I personally think it might have been for publicity.

Bit obvious it isn't him if you watched the episode aswell, but yeah it was for publicity plus I think Ferrari wouldn't let any other driver drive their car around the Topgear track, so that was the main reason MS was there.

Ferrari wouldn't allow top gear to test the new FXX, so they got their test driver which is Schumacher. You can also see in the credits it says Special guest Michael Schumacher. The BBC couldn't pay Schumacher enough to be the stig, they don't have that big of a budget to hire the greatest driver we have seen. The Stig is just a charactor there are multiple people who do it, you can see this by his height and build noticably changing in different episodes.

Schumacher would be too expensive for the BBC and like someone else said, Ferrari wouldn't let anyone else test drive the FXX around their track.
