this is not in techy bollocks because its more serious than that
ok people listen up
there is a new virus hitting many many people
it currently appears to affect windows xp, it screws your boot sector,
from what iv seen so far there are 2 versions of this virus
version 1:
screws your boot sector stoping the computer from loading windows correctly, this may include the computer restarting all the time during start up or freezing just after the windows logo dissapears
version 2:
does the same but far worse, it will stop the computer just after it does the device check right at the start
HOW TO FIX
version 1 can be fixed by putting your XP cd in the drive and when it gives you the 3 options (recovery console, set up xp and exit) push R, wait for a bit untill you see
C:/
then type "fixboot" (without quotes) it will ask if you want to confirm tell it yes, then type "exit" and the computer should restart fine
version 2 is a real ****, there so far apears to be no cure other than a format and re-install of windows, i have tryed everything else nothing works, it apears that th partition gets screwed over so not even putting the drive into another pc as a slave will work
please if this hits you let symantec or whoever yuor virus protection people are know about it, i have spent the day fixing this problem on many many pc's with a wide variety of virus protection and non of it has worked
be carefull people......
