Just looking for some opinions, i have been working on my phantom gear and its pretty much max, i was having a look at some of the top taos and and seen a few using crit damage gear so i have been refining some crit damage + phantom.
Anyway today it was mentioned to me that full on phantom is the way to go, and losing 4/5 phantom to gain crit damage 8% would be pointless, do people agree? Would crit damage be for later levels once hermit is max?

Your average hit is what 1500? 8% crit would average out as 1620. Does 4/5 phantom add 120 damage?

wrong ..

8% crit is the chance of casting/hiting the crit ... the damage from crit is 100% to mobs and 30% to player..
so lets say his damage is 1500 . with crit to mobs = 3000 damage and to player is around 1800.

Yer but point he’s saying is over 100 hits for instance it would average out as 120 damage.

My average hit with pet explode seems to vary massively depending on phantom adv/dis, in snow i hit about 1800 in lair it about 3000.
My pig will hit level 10 this weekend so with be getting another 8+ % crit damage, taking my total, if i swap gear to 16 (hopefully)

So what your saying is with that over 100 shots i will hit 16 crits, which will be 100% damage?
So what damage would an extra 5 phantom be over 100 shots?

Someone said to me yesterday each phantom is 10-10 damage, so 5 phantom over 100 shots would 5000 damage? Is this right?

If thats the case would massively out way the crit damage?

Firstly, ignore adv/dis. It will do exactly the same to element as it will to crit. x0 adv/dis is around 1,500 I believe. Pig also doesn't matter.

5 phantom over 100 shots would be 5*10*100, so 5000. 8 crits over 100 shots would be 8*1500, so 12000. Or 8*1500*0.3 in PvP, so 3600.

There is more to this however, with overkilling mobs "wasting" crits, and if the extra 50 damage means you need 1 less explosion etc. However the added benefit of the burst damage crit is you can outdamage potting speed in PvP. ie, if the person can pot through your 1550 damage pet, they won't die to you ever as they can sustain that damage. But if once every ~12 explosions you suddenly do 1950, they might not be able to sustain that extra 500 damage and can actually die. If you've played WoW, PvP specs tend to be burst specs while raid specs are normally sustained damage ones (until stats get so high the burst specs kill the boss before the sustained ones catch up! Arcane mages in WoD). ie player 1 heals for 50hp/sec, if player 2 can only do 40hp/sec they never win, however if they sometimes do crits and therefore jump up to 80hp/sec for a few secs, they can win depending on player 1s hp, and how often player 2 crits.

Basically, it's a different playstyle. I prefer crits, but there is merit for element too. Many players like the consistency of elements. They know they will do x damage at all times with no variation. Others like an element of chance.

Edit: side note, crit scales A LOT better than element (element doesn't scale, its always 10-10). If your pet is instead doing 2000 damage an explosion, crit is adding 8*2000, so 16000 vs 5000 of the 5 element. The higher your base element is, the more value crit is. I seriously hope this post doesn't make crit items skyrocket in price haha.

Brilliant reply, thanks for the info.
My crit gear is just about complete and should have pet level 3 by end off weekend so will do some testing next week, but i think losing a few element will be worth it.

Thanks again

Is this more todo with sc scaling?
Be interesting to hear what you think/ come up with.

My only issue now is with phantom a hit like a wet noddle in pvp, even if i carry holy tails because i dont have holy there is just no power, i have high sc and luck 3, my only option is too have a holy set of gear or change wep/hermit for pvp, no good if attacked while out hunting tho?

As for the crit damage, so far i think its been worth it, im hitting about 100 less in lair but get a crit damage nearly every lure of 6k.
