well my isp (pipex) has introduced p2p throttling which limits my p2p bandwidth to around 25kbps, ive fixed torrents by allowing encryption which puts me up to 200+kbps on a 3mb line which seems fine. but limewire doesnt have an encryption option or anything like that, ive googled to try and find some info but i am stuggling, could sum1 maybe help me setup a proxy? would this get around my problem?

A public proxy will not help you, as it will no doubt be slower than 25KB/s.

One way they can effect LimeWire is by enabling traffic shaping on certain incoming ports. Afaik Limewire has a default port on setup yes? In your preferences, change the port to something else... like 1109. Don't forget if theres any settings on your firewall/router to change to do that also. It might just work. Although, I think 25KBp/s is pretty good for Limewire :/

Personally though 2f2f, I'd ask your ISP for your MAC code and switch to another ISP. Most will allow you to migrate for free. Stay away from the mainstream ones and not only will you get a good deal, but you will also get full speed p2p... for now .

ffs, i just switched to pipex (got online with them 2 days ago!)... -_- I was previously with tiscali, they are walkovers, however, there service now offically sux since they introduced the upto 8 meg MAX package.

How did you sort your torrents? mine download no faster than 22kb/s atm :s

Well i have done what you done 2f2f with torrents,but the fastest speed i get is 33 kb/s -__- looks like my torrent/p2p downloading days are over, for a year anyway :P

tbh, ive used aol for past year, never had a problem, good speeds, decent support and of course 0 download limiting.

For such a downtalked isp they served me pretty damn well.

Pipex seem good so far (apart from the p2p throttling limit), as i have a free static ip (WoW ), unlimited & download whenever i want (NO FUP like tiscali, only downside is cant download torrents or nothing so not much use lol -__-), no lagg in games (so far tested mir & guild wars), and fast browsing (something i havnt had over the past few months with tiscali ).

Well i dispise the aol software, but using wireless and a specific setup i dont need to run or use any of the bundled aol cack, if i had to load that damn app which eats like 60mb of ram doing nothing id probably have a different opinion.

Pipex have an Acceptable Usage Policy which specifically allows them to penalise 'heavy users'. By all means, it is essentially your typical FUP. The good news is that unlike other ISPs like Sky/Easynet, Tiscalli, TalkTalk, etc... you will not be experiencing any issues due to central overcrowding. Since people have been leaving pipex en masse. You may wish to read over the T&C to see if theres anyway to get out of the 12 month contract (why on earth anyone would join with that condition is another cause to wonder).

I will never understand why reasonably astute people pick mainstream ADSL ISPs. Research before you buy! ><

Well, a way i found of getting out of tiscalis was to download heavy amounts of data during peak hours so you break there FUP. Then, after 3 warnings they cut you off (something like that anyway).

And i read over the pipex website, and i never saw a usuage policy lol ><

There's an even better way to solve your problems.

Stop using P2P... it's slow and the most monitored form of this type of download.

Sure, usenet will cost you a little each month but I for one get my money back 10 fold every month.

I have NEVER had an issue with my account in the entire time i used them, the software is the worst PoS i have ever come across, my download speed is perfectly fine, nor is my bandwidth throttled to the extent of most isps.

And your telling me that 30 quid a month for 8 meg is bad? i live in NI so quite a few of the not so "mainstream" hosts dont cover here.

I currently pay £20 for 15 meg with no FUP. That also includes Cable TV and phone .

What looks interesting to me is Sky's BB package. £10 p/m for 16mBit with no download limit, throttling or port blocking. Although if they keep increasing the size of their customer base I'd imagine these things will be introduced. With a 12 month contract enforced, I think I'm gonna wait and see.

Ive had bad service from sky, been offlie for 5 weeks for "reasons unknown" as they say, so BT have offered us 8MB unlimited bandwidth,no port blocking or throttling, one of those "home hub" things with the VoIP handset and package entitled BT Talk, as well as a second phone line for £22.99 per month, activation,3rd Jan

You can get BT... so unless your somewhere like the NI, Isle of Man or the Shetlands I don't see how your choices are so limited.

There are well over 50 ADSL providers, and around 8 LLU providers. You had far more choices than BT/Pipex, most of which offer much more generous terms than BT.

Its short sighted thinking like that which allows comms providers to charge artifically high prices to the detrement of us all. It then leads to a situation where more proficent users flock to the cheaper less restrictive ISPs, overcrowding them with heavy users leading to their ultimate demise or introduction of traffic shaping.

It really isn't hard to find sites like dslzoneuk or thinkbroadband.

Im with nildram, pretty expensive at £30 a month for 8Mb but they have no FUP or throttling etc. Never really had a problem with them (had a few but that was due to my ****ty exchange).
