I still dont get this arguement, why couldn't people jsut see it that he had used the wrong word, and left it at that? Seriously, most of the people on here aren't geared up to actually get intellectual in an arguement.

To this end, I think I should form "Team:Atomic (Language Division)" to basically make sure this doesn't happen again.

Hey everyone, lets take a crappy arguement and blow it out of proportion and use some awesome definitions that at no point actually address the simplicity of the issue.

You want to get involved in the English language heres your ****ing involvement.

First of all, the word "look" was used instead of the work "luck" at which point you can suggest the poster thinks "luck" is spelt "look". So we have a spelling mistake. Its a pretty simple case, he clearly doesnt know how to spell the word, therefore its a ****ing spelling mistake.

You want to address the concept of semantics, good for you, its nice that you want to better yourself. Semantics are commonly used to refer to a trivial point in something. Much like the arguement about the word "luck" being spelt "look", it doesnt really matter what type of error it was, the simple point is he made a ****ing mistake so lets not argue over the Sematics of it.

Semantics can also be used in refernce to:
1. The study of meaning - doesnt apply here, we know what he meant, and thats not the problem, its the fact it was spelt wrong that is the problem.

2. The meaning or intepretation of a word - doesnt apply here, we know what "look" and "luck" mean, we know how to intepret the words. There isnt a problem with that, even in relation with the sentence, we know what its supposed to mean, despite the error. Anyone that tried to intepret the sentence by seriously thinking the word "look" was meant to be there and wants to argue that cause is a ****ing moron who is too stupid to take part in this anyway.

3. Study of relationships of signs and their meaning - doesnt apply here, self explanatory.

This should just about close the arguement, and anyone who wants to take it further is more than welcome to as long as the realise whatever they say that contflicts with I said is wrong.

Welcome to English Language class, my name is god, and ill be your teacher this evening.

A little bored, are we, Atom?

He spelt look just fine.

Obviously then, you beleive he meant he wanted people to wish him "look" in which case I wish him to be able to "look" all he wants. The word was spelt wrong, its that simple. he doesnt know how to spell "luck" correctly therefore, spelt it wrong.

What and you have never used the incorrect word by mistake? I find it hard to believe someone doing A levels cant spell luck.

Even if it is the incorrect word, its still nothing to do with semantics. Also there are plenty of people that get far in the world without being able to spell properly, people who are dyslexic can do all kinds of jobs and they cant spell properly.

The only arguement Im really involved in is the one over semantics, and no matter how you spin it, semantics cannot be brought into the arguement.

Well as the name says, i've chosen Double ICT for 1 of my options, A* here i come!! haha wish me look

/Kev

Is there no single ict option?

What subjects could you be doing in the same block instead? ICT is a fine thing to have at GCSE/GNVQ, as long as its not at the expense of a real subject. And to be taking two hole blocks is a little excessive.

I don't know what the behaviour of students at your institution is like, but I remember when I was at school, it was the subject you'd find the worst of the worst in. Bare that in mind :P

Well depending on whats available, what he likes etc then it could bea good choice. Id say ICT is something most people on this forum, even the morons (although people like Hated1 etc have no hope at all) could score an easy A/A* in and when it comes down to it, that A/A* is an easy deciding factor for a job/college.

Although, my on my business course they were entirely impressed by the fact I got a B in PE, no idea why though. My entire class were idiots when it came to computers, and were left perplexed by a simple mouse unplugging. Infact, if you unplugged anything from the back of the computer, most of them reached the conclusion "the computer is broken" and only someone with serious computer skills could fix it.

Thats fair enough, but assume you took the single option for a second. What could you be doing in the other block. Tell us the options.

My school was far better, because my dad was in the army and we moved a lot, I basically ended up joining the school at the beginning of year 10. The options I was allowed to chose from included PE and Music, everything else was "full."

Thankfully I wanted to do PE but was stuck doing music which I personally think sucks serious ass, despite the fact I play Drums and other percussion.

Also leo, he is going to be doing the core classes anyway (English/Maths/Science) and a double award subject that he can probably get 2x A* in is more then likely the better choice. In terms of usage ICT can b applied almost anywhere, unlike subjects such as geography or history which are situational etc.

On a final note, I do use far far too many commas and im trying to cut down by constructing my sentences better.

LeoCrasher these are my other options :

Art (down to opinion)
Business Studies (useless at GCSE level)
Dance (gay)
Drama (gay)
Expressive Arts (emo and listed twice)
French (useful if you want to learn how to surrender)
D&T: Food Technology (housewife)
Geography (snore)
D&T: Graphic Products (sucks)
History (snore)
ICT (Applied)
Law (significantly awesome subject, and very intresting)
Media (useless)
GCSE Art & Design: Photography (useless)
Physical Education (I took this, depends on wether you like it or not)
Religious Education (LOL = ****)
D&T: Resistant Materials (crap)
Science (wtf, this should be a core subject)
Spanish (crap)
D&T: Textiles Technology (crap)
Travel & Tourism (BTEC) (for idiots)
Expressive Arts (emo)
Health And Social Care (gay)
D&T: Manufacturing Through Resistant Materials (forced to do this, it sucks serious ass)
Media Studies (crap)

I really do prefer ICT outa all these coz thats what im good at, not brilliant, but im good enough too get an A ;)

What you have to remember, is being too good at a subject can get you a lower grade. If you don't feel challenged and have a lesson on searching google, or how to save files in word, your going to switch off. Writing an essay on the same things will be hard because of lack of motivation.

I also took the liberty of giving my personal opinion on your possible subjects,

Im biased because I find law intresting, its the sort of thing that people rarely have on their CV, which is good cos it makes you stand out, however that isnt a good reason to chose it. You would probably learn about how laws work, how they are made, the court/criminl justice system etc.

Business is ok, but at GCSE level, its probably a waste of time. I took AVCE business in college, and I dont think one person in my group had done it at GCSE level. I also did law at A level, and enjoyed it.
