Mmmmm, DirectX10, you say?

This is tricky. You see, the two DX10 architectures at the minute are, well, stupid.

The 8*00 series from nVidia performs exceptionally well in DX9, trouncing ATI's 2*00 series. However, there are some reports suggesting the 2*00 series from ATI counterbalances this with a superior DX10 performance.

However, that said, I'm recommending the nVidia option.

Below is a list of parts I'd suggest for a nice, high end system.

Note that I've opted for only 2GB of ram, since you won't use 4GB in an x86 operating system (3GB maximum, unless you disable the page file).

Also note the use of one large hard disk, as opposed to two smaller in a RAID configuration, and the presence of a Blu-Ray reader.

well i am getting....

graphics card

GeForce 8800GTS 320MB DDR3 PCIE Dual DVI which is fully DX10 compatible which can be found http://www.dabs.com/productview.aspx?QuickLinx=4FFD

processor..

Intel Quad Core Q6600 2.4GHz http://www.dabs.com/productview.aspx?QuickLinx=4DWF

mobo

Asustek S775 nForce 680i ATX Audio Lan http://www.dabs.com/productview.aspx?QuickLinx=4CCD

You could get a cheaper mobo that would support the processor but i getting this 1 cus it is really really good and also supports 800mhz ram :D

Ram

Crucial 1GB 240-Pin DIMM PC2-6400 Unbuffered Non-ECC CAS4 http://www.dabs.com/productview.aspx?QuickLinx=444R

4GB costs £151

Also you would need a extra fan for the heat the processor and gfx card gives off... all that for 671 which is not bad at all hehe

well just getting him future proof.. and most people would use old components like power supplys out there old comp.. and a majority of comps have 500+.. i agree processor would not be beneficial and nothing atm uses all 4 cores.. but depends what u use comp for.. but at that price u cant complain really lol

So for running mir, it would be better of gettign a high GHZ procesor than a low quad one. :)

So just because they are new, Look at the inteded purpose of them, to multi task a few programs running them smoothly.

thanks for that auron, but what site is that lol

Sorry, I thought I'd tagged that on. Ebuyer.co.uk :)

@Tomz: Future proofing would be advising him to wait for the next generation, which will be DDR3 equiped ;)

Also, no, most current PCs sold do not come with 500W PSUs. Infact, of those that do, the majority of those will be incredibly poor quality, and will not deliver the full 500W, let alone within acceptable tolerances.

@daydie: I'm assuming because he mentioned DX10, he's not targeting Legend of Mir.

Many applications DO benefit from more cores, however it's worth balancing the speed drop per core versus the number of cores gained.

Since it's mainly media encoding/decoding applications that would benefit from more than two cores, it would be silly to recommend that in what appears to be a gaming system, especially given the extra heat & power consumption.

Depending on what you're after from the PC, this sort of setup would do well.

The top item partially on the screen is Vista home premium x64.

Quad cores will have more and more use in the future. If you like multitasking then they're very handy right now. With the chosen CPU cooler you could push the quad to 3.2Ghz per core. The RAM is a brilliant overclocker, people on the OcUK forums have had theirs running at almost double its speed.

I chose the 640mb 8800GTS over the 320mb just incase you fancy gaming at big resoloutions such as 1680x1050+

The case is brilliantly made, I have its bigger brother the V2000 and it is amazing.

Only thing lacking is a screen, but thats more visual choice rather than what performs best.

Total cost shipped: £1,203.00

Unfortunately so.

Ensure your wide screen TV supports at least 720p, for best performance. (1080p prefered, but that really WOULD be expensive ;))

Out of curiosity, why not opt for a 30 inch Dell LCD panel, which would be a higher resolution than 1080p, and probably a better picture quality, and simply add a TV tuner to your PC?
