My Mates Laptop

Just wanted to confirm my "inspection". What happened is that the laptop was on the floor and turned OFF, my Girlfreind then walked in and kicked a beer over the left hand side of the laptop (Keyboard). I left it to dry in a bag of rice, but my mate...being a prick , turned it on after about 4 hours of drying...Now, if this was me i would've waited a day or 2 and taken the thing apart...Sadly the result of turning it on led to the screen not working. My assumption is that these are the following problems..

BackLight - This has blown and is cheap to repair
GPU - This has blown and is ONBOARD, meaning new motherboard ...NOT CHEAP

Anyways, does anyone know a cheap laptop repair place i can use as obviously this is "MY" fault (even tho its his freaking laptop). ATM i have a free inspection slot with Currys ... but they charge alot for the labour.

Any suggestions ?

I've found that's when it comes to screens theyre usually uneconomical to repair, meaning the cost of repair outweighs the cost of a replacement laptop.

Worth an ask though.

my mate had a similar problem, unfortunately he ended up having to scrap the whole thing as his was far beyond repair, the GPU had blown and short circuited the Mboard, and his laptop was very, very old so to find a replacement was... well, meh.

you may be best off looking around your local town for Laptop Repair shops, asking what they charge and if they can fix your problems.

Actually , screens are fairly cheap to buy ... and replacing , ok its hard with all the ribbon cables, but its doiable. Thanks for the reply though mate.

Yeah, I have a hunch the GPU may have gone (It's on the same side as the spill). The laptop itself is fairly new (around £800). It costs about £140 for new motherboard, but i don't want to do it myself and currys charge around £200 for replacement (Obscene). If its the backlight though... i can do that myself, i guess my best bet is to get a free inspection from currys and source the parts myself and pray for the best.

My mate is a complete douche (Not even my mate, its my MATES mate .... hes a complete and utter queen about this ****).

best place for repairs i think are small laptop repair shops (Compare on Google) around your local area

when my lappy fooked i payed 100 for check and repair and that was issure with water damage ...(too bad i live in kettering :P)

Thanks Myth , im going to get a free check in currys and take the report to a small business laptop shop , see if i can blag it lol. I dont even know why im doing it lol, its not like i kicked the beer or left it on the floor (by a door) lol.

Guess he's lucky it was switched off.

Depending on the make and model of laptop, would depend on the fault caused.

HP|Compaq - GPU failure will cause the laptop to boot and power off in cycle (General fault with the Compaq F700)
Toshiba gives you a binary fault coded from power on lights, which determines the fault.

Normal issues with screen not coming on if the laptop powers on, is either GPU failure or the inverter has gone. If it's the inverter that's gone, it would only cost you about £15 to replace yourself or full price of a new screen if it's a repair like PCWorld fixing it for you.

I'm surprised at Currys though not charging you for an inspection, but be careful when they tell you what is wrong with it though. Unless they have sent it off for a full inspection to Nottingham, then it won't be a fully diagnosed fault and they will make faults up just to get you to pay to fix.

If you feel confident enough, you can actually check if the fault is the GPU by using a power meter and checking what voltage is going through the GPU in power on.

Make sure they get in one of the Tech Engineers, as they are only level entry trained in store and so don't do inspections properly.
