People forget mir works a lot differently to new games interms of how things are processed, packets prepared and received/sent, its old, it dosnt send a lot of packets compaired to games like WOW, so gamebooster makes massive differences between old and new.

Gamebooster adjusts, services, desktop settings, performance settings, disables background programs, registry files and changes how packets are sent

witch is why a program like gamebooster has a different effect on a game, like mir, the person using the program might only notice the game being smoother in there eyes, but the fact you are now transmitting and receiving your packets alot faster then players not using it, giveing you a massive advantage, as your always 2 steps ahead before it even registers on there screen that you have even moved......

you don't notice this so much in 3d games like wow as things are optimized better and lag is experienced in different ways (usually rubberbanding small increments, and as theres so much more going on FPS becomes more of a main aim)
But it dosnt work like that in mir, because of the way you move and are place on the map.

So yes things like gamebooster do give you advantages with a game this old, and it shouldn't be allowed, we should all be on a even playing field(ping/lag issues is something completely different, try a service like WTFast if you have high ping from living over seas).
People clearly know what there doing, and know in doing it gives them advantages.
Having an attitude like "if you dont want to download it then dont! but dont take it from those that can be arsed" just shows people want an advantage over others.

Noone should have to download additional software or adjust windows system files just to be on a fair playing field. (if you looking for PC performance that is different.)

So if I and another Chronicles player both have the same 10 year old Dell desktop with a 128MB video card and 1GB of RAM and I run CCleaner regularly on my PC, clean it with a vacuum every month and close all open programs before I log in, while he does none of those things I have an unfair advantage and I should feel bad/stop doing it?

No, sorry, that's not how either Windows or the world work. Everyone is free to use whatever program they wish as long as it doesn't modify the game's files directly, same as you're free to use 5 VMs for 5 instances of alts mining (on other servers) if your hardware allows for it.

I'd say this is a massively gray area. Takign care of your machine, and keeping it up to scratch is one thing. This is something that everyone should do, as it is best practice.

However, something like gamebooster (and other profiling/optimising) software people specifically run at the time of running the game to get the boost.

As it has been said before, on modern games this has a much reduced effect due to the way data is transfered/handled.

Either way, you are making a conscious choice to use this piece of software specifically for the enhancement of the game. It is well within the rights of the dev team to turn around and say 'if we see you using these, we will take action'.

Whether you agree with it or not is irrelevant. You are not the one running the server.

That last paragraph is basically what this boils down to. If the admins say 'you can only play this server if you name your character PINK<yourname> otherwise you get banned - then that is what you do. if you don't like it, dont play. I knwo this is the extreme version, but you get my drift.

I have hosted (and developed) many many games where this sort of issue has been argued over and over. The result is allways the same - 90% of the people complaining just shut up and play. Some of those get banned for ignoring the rules - a small minority circumvent the system. The remaining 10 % of complainers go to another server.

Based on the fact that the only people complaining are the people who use it, and are complaining because they don't want to loose they're advantage - those figures are more than acceptable losses in any game environment, as they are also the people that tend to push boundaries on other things too (packet modifiers etc etc).

Sorry for the wall of text, but this is something I deal with a lot, and feel quite strongly for - and have massive empathy for Sam and BH.

There's no need to be empathetic towards Sam and BH, they're not exactly hurting because X or Y whine on the forums that someone else's PC is better or runs Mir faster. You can really only run it at a max of 30 FPS, which is quite frankly closer to what I got on old hardware than it is on my current gaming PC. I have no clue why it's slower now, but I never, ever had frame lag that wasn't due to net in Mir 2/3, even with lures that filled the screen and spells flying everywhere.

If running GameBooster makes the game smooth again, as it should be, you're damn right I'm going to use until/if BH or Sam ever declare it illegal (at which point I would quit as you have no business snooping in my processes/tasks lists - Origin has been boycotted since forever for that).

In the end GB doesn't do anything that a faster PC/a newer Windows install/a faster internet connection don't do. I've been running it on my PC for games for a while (honestly never thought to use it for Mir, as it has such insanely low reqs) and have looked at the available options many times, I never saw anything at all relating to the network, except for a few non-essential services you can choose to disable on boost.

Anyone mind illuminating me about the GB setting that magically "makes you always 2 steps ahead of everyone"?

I think the code of conduct regarding abuse and offensive language needs fo be thoroughly checked into. Ive been told a few are leaving regarding this (obviously the cheaters are making them leave too).

Whats the thoughts of using a service called WTFast? Reduces the ping connection to the server as a form or network/application enhancement. Is this acceptable?
