1.9 spells?

Apologies for the noob question (plz don't ban me Kaori) but I was away from Mir during the whole 1.9 phase...left in 1.4 and returned to 2.3, as a result never played on 1.9..

After browsing some things am I right in thinking that 1.9 has a lot more spells than 2.3? If so, why? If not...ignore it.

as far as i remember there weren't a lot more spells.. probably the emu files had different spells acting in a odd way compared to the official mir as for example the flamefield used to be casted on the mobs and not around the caster.. don't really remember any spell which isn't there now but that is probably because i never played tao or war..
