ok this morning i have just got in touch with bt and they said they can offer me a 8 line with a 40 gig download limited im unsure really if i want a limit as iv never had one before im not a heavy downloader but when uv got 8 meg behind you i dunno i think i would download more i was just wondering how much a month would a 1.4 server use of my 40 gig just need a rough idear as im not 100% sure i want to go with limits.

well, try and find out what happens after you use the 40gig.
Some internet providers will just cut you off.
My internet provider must not watch the usage of my account or somet as iv got a 2gig limit downloaded, and i download near enough 100mb a day at least and thats not including gaming.
Only time they complained was when they sent me a letter for using over my limit after 3 months in a row but they never said anything since i got that letter befor christmas
You may find that BT would just cut you off. But at 40gig i wouldnt see you needing to go over it. I could be wrong because im not too sure how much of your bandwidth a server would take up. I am guessing that it would depend on how many players you wish you

yes ok thanks alot that doesnt help 100% though lol i need to know how much an average server with an avarage user count would take i think im safe getin 40 gig limit (be`ing the top package)
iv just spoke to my current ISP (aol) they have said why are you changing i said because my 12 month contract is up and cant be bothered with 1 meg any more so we are goign with bt top offer atm they said they can offer me more for the price im paying now aprently my line will only hold upto 3.5 meg so even if i get 8 meg i wont have full 8 meg untill the lines free up more if u get me they also said i can have a free speed touch wireless router all for 25 pounds a month and there would be no monthly useage what do you guys suggest? lol im confused my current isp cuts out after ssay 200 hours with a wireless router im thinking it could maybe cut out more i dont want to be disconnected from the net at all really. some suggestions would be great as im in a weird situation here. lol

well, ill try and help with the wireless thing this time.
Dont run a server on wireless, it'd suck. I have a wanadoo livebox and they update it all the time for stupid reasons and im cut of for say 10-15mins. can be anoying when your downloading.
Not saying BT would upgrade theirs, but wireless aint great for gaming so im guessing it wouldnt be great for hosting a server.
Although if you just use the ethernet from the router you should be fine after port forwarding.
Also you not stuck to using the router, you can keep using the thing you use now i guess, a ADSL modem or what ever.

Bt is good but at time it is anoying, one of the main reasons i changed to NTL since bt cuts off a lot in my area but you can get cheeper broadbands from the new companys like wanadoo and stuff like that which you can get higher speeds off with a much lower price really. Have you looked around for different companys for broadband or are you sticking with BT for good?
Sidenote: Im asuming you live alone or with your gf. if you live with your parents then ignore most of my post.

well with these other isp`s my m8 has wandoo and every time he picks up the fone it cuts out lol and with these cheap packages your expecting downtime defo. i have had bt before when broadband came out half a meg was the best never down never d/c but know its all different so many peaple useing broadband now and the systems get clogged up ect n drop wel im not 100% sure lol i think im going to give aol a ring a see when they can make my line 3 meg as its goign to be unlimited(no limits) which i personally se fits my benefits more although dont want downtime im used to aol and its 1 second downtimes every 200 hours or so im not fussed really i do want a decent conection im gettin avrage 200 kb sec on 1 meg with aol if they put me upto 3-3.5 meg its going to be 600 kb sec + im wondering if im going to get like 600kbs upload speed. at least i want more than 256!!

Disturbed is running off a 2MB line with 256k upload, and doesn't really have that much problems right now.Zidio said:

. If your sticking with BT then just check out the terms and conditions etc really. since they are easy goingDunno if this has been said but; some ISP will cut you off for the rest of the month, some ISP will take your speed down to 56kb, some will just ignore it.

ok back on topic.. i decided to go with aol untill i rang them up to then speak to adifferent person before and they now claim they only do up to 1 meg on my phone line lol so im going to have to go with bt 8 meg i will only get around 3 meg for a start then soon as my line improves it will go up to say 5 then upto 8 eventually 30 p/m free router. thanks for the help/advice peeps.
