Is it possible to use the autopatcher for servers on a linux webhost? or does it need to be windows.

also is it very resource intensive for the actual server?

thanks

Wrong forum, server help would be more approapriate.

Meanwhile you should know that the WEMADE autopatcher is a clientside application. Any FTP server will do regardless of the platform its hosted on. You could have the FTP on RiscOS4 for all the patcher cares. There is absolutely NO serverside processing involved in the wemade patcher.

I'll assume your not running the MIR server on linux too (since you can't), therefore all usage of the FTP server shouldn't effect your mirserver whatsoever providing your using different hosts.

If for some reason your sharing the same connection, bandwidth and speed maybe an issue depending on your provider.

kaori released a program which created the klist file for the server side, i was querying the path you would use if it was on a shared webhost

i was referring to if the files were hosted on a shared webhost (not the same as the actual server). would it cause a problem for other users on the server... eg by like taking up all the RAM or whatever

Kaori is obviosly in a better position than myself to advise on the usage of her KaoriPatchGZ applet, however I'll give it a go.

The path itself is not as important as the WEMADE patcher, as Kaori cleverly utilises HTTP instead (also meaning you don't need an FTP server). If you have a webaddress like http://www.nemesis-server.co.uk, and you have the klist file inside a directory called 'Patch', then inside the KaoriPatchGZ.ini you would enter for the gz config file;
KaoriPatchListFile=http://www.nemesis-server.co.uk/patch/!klist.gz

Now the webserver CPU/RAM usage is none of your concern, but bandwidth will be. I'm pretty sure your not sharing your connection so I'll leave it at that. Just remember its no different to hosting your website.

The patching applet itself which runs on all your players machines is a little different. Typically it runs BEFORE the game itself starts, so it shouldn't interfere with their gaming experiance. Your players will also need to have the Java virtual machine installed on their machine (imo, an unworthy pain in the arse)... which is why I typically recommened the WEMADE patcher for those motivated enough to use it.

All sorted? ^^

what is the difference with the wemade patcher (does it let you point it anywhere?), and where can we get a copy of it

The wemade patcher is the one that comes with EuroMIR. Its a LOT less feature rich than KaoriPatchGZ, and much harder to use but doesn't require the Java VM.

It also requires the use of an FTP server, preferably read only or anonymous. And its also a nightmare to configure correctly. You can rip it from your EuroClient or get all the ness files from this thread;

so the best option you feel is using the original patcher done by wemade. however to generate the !plst.txt file could you use kaori's admin panel and just rename the file, it looks to be the same format..? or does it use different compression ratios?

sorry for so many questions, but am just trying to work out a viable download solution

I feel its better for the PLAYERS to use Wemade's solution since only the people who use Limewire or Azureus are likely to have the Java VM already. It is however invariably easier for the server owner to use Kaori's solution (especially when you have no understanding of FTP servers).

I very much doubt Kaori's admin thingy will generate a compatible plist, but look on the thread I linked you to - there is one that can generate the plist there. :)

The linked plistgenerator will compress your files into the GZIP format and output the correct entry for the plist file. It doesn't matter which machine you do it on.
