even though im poor x2, and couldnt afford one atm. does anyone here have a barebone system?

do they perform as well as desktop pcs?
are the parts easy to get?
are the smaller parts more expensive? (mb/hdd)
what, if any, make would you suggest? shuttle/biostar/aopen/asus?

like i said, i cant afford one now. but ive wanted one for a while, i like having a laptop because of it being portable, but it doesnt perform well enough to play games.

By barebones I assume you mean SFF (small form factor) PC's like the little shuttle boxes and such?

If you build one custom made they are cheaper then the barebones case+mobo and they perform just as well because they are technically the same chipset's as their ATX counterparts just in M-ATX form.

edit: didnt realise it was in euros (thought it was in $)

do you know the currency change to £?

edit edit: £700 for that. still quite good.

ive already got a good 120gb HDD (almost new), i believe its SATA. could that be used in a Barebone system?

For the love of Mary, Joseph and Jesus, if you paired corsair ram with something like a FX-57 I'd kill you.

Your basically looking @ mobo+cpu+ram = 1100 pounds.

Chipset is not NF4 because I'm pretty sure there are no NF4 M-ATX boards, and the only nvidia 6100 boards I know of are from foxconn.

the barebone im looking at with NF4 is a biostar iDEQ 330P.

i only said corsair with athlon xp fx because they are the two best components it let me group them up with.

what ram chip would you recommend getting with athlon64 fx cpu?

@obliv. the cases alone are around £200-£300 for a barebone. so i highly doubt you could afford one.

Naw, that 1gig set, overclocked like a *****.

I like the idea of guaranteed speed.

Actually the ballistix tracer's overclock much better than the corsair XL and 2Gb is must for modern gaming.

**** those little boxes, their heat disgusts me.

Custom box + m-atx mobo = cheaper, runs cooler, more upgradability, and more overclocking options :brows:

what do you mean by a custom box? i dont suppose your implying i build a box from scratch so have you got a link to any?

i was interested in barebones because of their small size and portability. ive seen barebones taller than by current box so i hope you dont mean those. SFF for mee.

You would have to find one in the UK though :/

OR.... this requires some modding... Get the readily available Antec Aria case (similar size) HOWEVER you really need to cut a hole for a fan on the side because the case has horrible ventilation, especially for a kickass system.

From what i've seen, you may be better choosing these.

The GSKILL I tested crapped out at about the low 260's @ 3-3-3-8. I know people who have gotten in the high 270's and low 280's but the Crucial Ballistix (and especially Tracer's) have a more consistant 270-290 range @ around 3-3-3-8. I'll tell you what I want to play with though is the OCZ kit, supposed to be trouble :D. I'm actually replacing my 2GB DDR400 cheap kit (241 @ 3-4-3-7 :cray: ) with some Crucial Ballistix I found for relatively cheap, no tracer's though, those are crazy prices :punch:

oh right i think ive seen plenty of those around. so you would recommend them over any of SFF box? including ones like shuttle?

its just abit ugly to say the least. i wasnt planning on upgrading the front slots much, wouldnt want a floppy, and would only want one dvd-rw drive.

do none of the barebones have good airflow in your opinion?

Ouch. I know the price of the normal ballistix compared to the tracers is insane. It's why i particularily dislike them :P

I've only ever heard good about the G.Skill though, you're the first guy i've heard not to top 270 :P

Yes, over any SFF box, including shuttle. Better airflow and you can upgrade the motherboard anytime you want, not to mention cheaper.

There are other colors too, but ye not too pretty.
