Hmm. If he has books on C++ I'd recommend C++, books are far superior to internet tutorials when it comes to learning a language.

I find learning by experience the best. Decide you want to make something (simple, not too hard) and then go for it, reading what you need along the way.

Once you know the basic concepts of programming and 1 language, its easier to learn other languages.

I started with QBasic (****e) after using it for a about 3 months and not getting very far i stopped programming for 2 years or so and then started using mIRC (and thus mIRC Scripting - which is also ****e), after that I moved onto TCL, then PHP, then VB6 (yes its crap but its easy to pick up), then VB.net (which I never really liked, and went back to VB6), then I started on Delphi, and now I'm using Java.

I've also done a bit of C between VB and VB.net

Each time I've switched languages, the only real hurdle is learning how things are done in the new language compared to the "old" one, the concepts and ideas are pretty much the same. (Altho going from procedural -> OOP was a bit challenging iirc)

Starting on VB isn't a problem - its a good starting language - just DON'T expect to be able to use it for anything serious.
