My Mate Is on BT (UK) for his ADSL, now he has a bt voyager 105 hooked up via USB to his Laptop. He Is having problems which are very odd to say the least and not experience by me at all...

If we chat Via Skype all is well, soon as he downloads anything, chat gets Garbled, my chat to him is delayed easy 10 seconds if not more. If he goes in a game (FPS say) and we also chat at the same time, he lags... If he quits Skype then his lag stops.

Setup

My Setup - SB4100 Cable Modem connected via Network to a router, all PCs connected by Network cable. I am on 750/128

His Setup - bt voyager 105 connected directly to his Laptop Via USB, says he has latest drivers and is on 576/256.

Tests
Using NetPeeker, Skype uses 3-4K Sec for voice chat.
If I download a program, Play a game or whatever, the speed will not go over what is left, even uploading also is 4k Off what is my max (which makes sense as Skype Is using that).

On his side it seems that a download will consume the full bandwidth, which means skype is fighting for any thats left if at all, thus breaking comms. Oppisite effect on Games, Skype uses 4K or whatever and games start tp struggle.

Personally I do not understand this from a technical stand point, surely if on his end Skype is using 4K then his DOwnload should not somehow try and use more??? Has anyone else got a bt voyager 105 or similar and had the same sort of problems, cos tbh its beats the hell out of me...

My Advice to him was chuck in the Bin the following:

BT ADSL - cos its Crap on a stick
USB Only Modem - cos USB Sucks

Any ideas?

What's skype, I can't look up anything really @ school.

If skype is the problem, why not use a similar product.

Skype is VOIP software.

First, try some alternatives, such as Free World Dialup.

Secondly, that sounds about right, tbh. The only way i could think to get around this would be to get a second skype-pc, then using you router or other sotware, cap the main gaming PC to the full speed - 4KiB.

There's probably an easier way, but i don't have much experience in this :)

Well when he came to my house, both of us on my connection, playing MOHAA, talking via SKYPE (me + Him talking to 2 others) and no problems whatsoever...My two guesses so far are:

1. BT Are the worst ISP in the world.
2. USB Modem/connection is crap - causing this problem maybe?

My point was my Skype uses 4K and a download can only go as fast as the bandwidth left, it does not steal any from skype at all, On his side, Skype (same version) drops to 1K as soon as he downloads and the d/l maxes out...very odd indeed is all im saying,.

I also use Skype and have never had any problems having it on, chatting while playing FPS (cs, cs: s, UT, rtcw or XIII).

I don't see why it should be Skype, have a look for rouge processes or anything that might be stealing from you.
