buying a router, have a couple of questions

im buying this router on wednesday

mainly to be able to connect my PS2 to the cable modem so I can play burnout 3 online when it comes out.

i just like to know, when I setup this router will I still need a firewall running on my computer and any other computer connected to the router? or is it not necessary?

How do I open ports on it for things like mir servers/bit torrent/winmx etc?

how exactly does it work? compared to a regular switch? It gives each computer an indervidual IP address or something? or do you need to have each computers network card configured to 192.168.0.X ?

routers already have a built in firewall. and i play everquest on my PS2 and im on a router, all u need to do is reconfig ur network adapter.


and for bittorent and other p2p, u dont need to open ne ports

A router works by taking your current BB connection and sharng it with other PC or consoles. It doesnt split it up just shares it. everthing connect to ur router will have a LAN ip of 192.168.1.XXX. that is ur LAN ip only. hosting a m2 srvr will repuire u to open ports and u will need the outside IP for the hosting PC.

Setup is a breeze you litterly plug it in. no config need for ur PC. and ur PC should auto detect ^^.

ok thanks for your help mate, but what about these guides for setting up mir servers through routers I see everywhere? if I was to setup a mir server, surely I would have to do something with my router, or do those guides simply tell you how to open ports on your router?

and once I setup my router I wont need a firewall at all on any computers?

One thing you need to be sure of if you wish to host a mir on a router is that the router has loop-back.
Without loop-back you will not successfully host a mir server.

Erm... if u were to set up a mirserver on your router you would need a FIREWALL... otherwise people will PING YOU and make your server very, very LAGGY!!! To host a mir2 server, u would need to forward these ports, to your routers IP... 7000, 7100, 7200 & 3000, BOTH TCP and UDP... ( to play the mir2 server on any of your other pc's MAKE SURE THE ROUTER SUPPORTS LOOPBACK FUNCTIONALITY!!!! OTHERWISE, u can only play it on the HOSTING PC!!!!
