I'm starting to upload some game videos to youtube, but recording them on fraps saves very large files (70GB for 30 minutes footage)

I want to be able to easily edit the videos later on (cut, paste, add effects between etc) but haven't got enough hard drive space to keep files this large forever.

If i add all the file parts to movie maker, compress them in to one 720p avi (a lot smaller file) will they still be easy to edit afterwards?

I've never done video editting before.

Download and install Sony Vegas Pro 10 or 11 for video editing and adding effects, you can then choose the compression rate of the video file and the output, so that it reduces the file size. I wouldn't use movie maker for any of this.

These are some of what I've done in Vegas Pro 10

Highly recommend Vegas Pro, if your gonna make a thing out of YT videos then you'll probably have to use it at some point. I managed to get ~50gb (40 minutes) into a 800mb file. Low resolution but high bitrate, could've gotten it lower if I wanted.

Can download a bunch of add ons for effects and it's as simple as dragging it on a clip.

Loads of different settings, and for you, YTing something like "vegas pro settings games" gets this:

I know you asked about movie maker but you just gotta use Vegas Pro when it comes to video editing!

It depends how extreme you go with settings because Fraps records what you see and I'm sure you know that usually the lower the file size the worse the quality. YT also has a limit of 2gb per file and a maximum time of 10 minutes (might be more now). Also may want to take note that YT only supports 30 fps, not that rendering a 60 fps would make the file size much greater.

It would be a lot easier to edit Fraps files after they've been compressed because they've been grouped (guess you could do this manually). But also it would be a lot smoother whilst editing as the file size would be significantly smaller, and depending on your computer, it can slow down editing massively. Having said that, you play Tera so I don't think this will be much of a problem for you.

Thanks guys that exactly what i wanted to know.

I just didn't want to compress the raw footage to a 2GB file and delete the raw files, only to find out that because its a single file and lower quality that it was impossible to edit.

I'll def be getting Vegas so edit videos.
