Worthing is depressing.
Okey breif intro...

Im making a database to record couples details, and information on their wedding rings for my GF's parents who are jewelers. So it needs to contain names, dates, contact details, and ring information.

I have started it in Access, as their current one is in access with people accessing it via a shortcut on their desktops to the file located on server. Now my friend who study's law babbled out data protection etc. (lets face it.. if people want to hack they will..)

So.. THE QUESTIONS

Which is better to use? If it is SQL would anybody mind helping me set it up.. i will set it up mostly, and teach myself, but will need help, and ill give them few ££)

If people feel its access.. anybody mind testing my current one, and helping me improve..

Basically i'm asking for helping hand too.. Money will be given for any big helping hands out of my own pocket as i'm doing it for free!

Im pretty sure the best way would be doing it through a website with restricted rights, logins required ect, you could then update the web spreadsheet and that would reflect to whats displayed on the site once logged in. this way people wouldnt be able to edit the fields, unless they had access to your spreadsheet and ftp details. you could even do it through the webhosting sql databases.

Abit more info on what your trying to actualy acheive here would be helpfull though :) As im not 100% sure if im pointing you in the right direction with what your wanting to do :D

Basically, what they have at the moment is a small server, with the access file on. They then all load and work on this DB via shortcuts on their desktops, there is only 4 pc's in the office. All working from 1 Database.

All they need is a database where they can edit and add clients, clients cannot view this database though. However i've got to set this up.. so simple options = best options!

I can provide you with my Access DB of what im trying to achieve if needed if it would help you understand the needs. My worry with the Access DB is a 2GB size limit will clients details + 2/4 images fill that space up fast??

For small business' I would say to just use Access - if it gets too big just start another and the old one can be an archive. As long as the images aren't huge it should take a while to fill a 2GB database.

Ahh ok well the images can be scrapped if necessary, it was an additional feature i planned to add so they could load up images of specific rings for taking to show clients etc...
