its cleans your hardrive, allowing data to send from and to the hard drive quicker. So ye it speeds it up abit. U dont usually notice it though :(

Well, at least this is what i think it doesn, please correct me if i am wrong :)

You can usually notice the difference when you boot yur computer up, sometimes its abit quicker when you defrag :)

It puts data in order, basically your data is thrown around, and has spaces inbetween it on the harddrive, so you have to jump from place to place to get the correct data you need, defragmenting puts it all into ordeer, hence the speed boost.

Defrag basically re-arranges the data in your hard disk, so that it can be read faster.

Imagine your hard disk is like a book, and your data words on it's pages. Over time, the words from the same sentence get moved apart, as the sentence is constantly added to. So in order to read the full sentence, you must look in many places. This is how a fragmented hard disk behaves.

Disk defragmenter basically collects all the words from the sentence, and puts them next to each other. So when you come to read the whole sentence, you can do it faster.

Different programs (the one's you pay for...) can defragment your hard drive more effectively than the default windows defrag software. My personal favourite is 0&0 defrag which gives you several other options such as offline degramentation. When you start your PC you can schedule a defrag before any system file is loaded thereby giving the defragmenting software full access to every file on your hard drive.

You do generally see a massive increase in performance when searching for files on your computer or using graphical editing sofware. Reformat at least every 2nd month.

Just make sure you do not accept to download the program that pops up called download_plugin.exe! You need to click the link in the page (near the top where the instructions are).

cheers m8, guna do a virus scan -.- i clicked that download =/

doh!! >< lol hope it ain't infected you.

Also basically a hardrive stores data (or attempts to) in blocks, which when optimized are contiguous [single block]. When new data is written to the hard-drive, it attempts to continue in the same contiguous manor, however when a single block cannot store the whole of any one file, that file is split into several bits and spread over an area of hard disk.

The problem here is that when the system is retrieving the file for use, it has to make a multiple search. It would be easier (and therefore faster) if the system had to look in one single contiguous block for any given file. Fragmentation is inevitable, but systems can reduce performance loss by periodically defragmenting their hdds. It is especially advisable after a massive uninstall or install of a program that takes up a lot of space [especially games].

Turin.

ps - check my last post for update crack link m8 :ppunk:
