I've just basically built a new system, however it needs the help of the XP setup CD to boot into windows.

If I don't have the CD in (therefore booting from the hard disk straight off), it says theres a disk boot failure. However if I stick the XP CD in, let it timeout so it boots windows... it boots to the HD just fine.

The HD is on the Primary channel (CD on Sec), set to master and is otherwise fine. Been working in the pervious system for around 3-4 years with no problems. (20GB Maxtor).

The motherboard is an NF7-S, and I have no idea why this type of behaviour would otherwise occur.

Ty in advance

If the MBR was the problem, how come the HD boots perfectly fine after the WinXP boot CD's 'Press any key to boot from CD...' time out?

Also, moving the HDD to the top of the boot priorities gives the same error, but with no way for me to get out of it. At least booting to the CD first and letting the prompt timeout boots the hard disk without problems.

Finally... the HD boots fine in two other machines.

Bad motherboard then. Probably an IDE controller problem (Assuming you're using IDE.)

Tried a BIOS update?
