What you will need to know is wether its a bog standard amd or if its am2 - now if its am2 most network drivers for the am2 board will work - but you also need to indentify what type of network it is wether it 10mb, 100mb or 1gb.

What ship is it, just standard or 64 as this also helps in finding out what board it is as well.

Athlon XP and Athlon 64 are different entirely. I do agree that the socket in use is important though. An Athlon XP is likely a skt 939, 940 or AM2. Search for and download CPU-Z to find out the details of your motherboard and cpu and go to the relevant website to download the latest drivers.

Althlon XPs stopped short of socket AM2. This socket was released for the 64 bit AMD processor only. To my knowledge no 32 bit AMD CPU has ever run on a socket AM2. In fact I dont beleive any 32 bit AMD CPU has ever run on any socket other than A!

Athlon XP = Socket A
Althon XP 64 = Socket 754, 940 (opteron socket)
Althlon 64 = Socket 939, AM2
Althlon 64 X2 = Socket 939, AM2
Althlon 64 FX = Socket F

If its more than 2 years old, it definitly wont be an AM2, more likely a 754 or 939. If its an Athlon XP then it can only be a Socket A.
