Hey I know leo can answer the question I am about to ask but if theres anyone else who can answer it please do, I don't know if any of you have heard but a team has started making emulator for star wars galaxies and are currently in phase 3 or core 3 as there calling it.

Now I was wondering what the deal is with servers legal wise, Is it legal to host a server if your making no profit and if your making no profit that basically means Sony can't do **** to stop you from hosting a server or am I wrong?

Does anyone know the rules I know leocrasher made a thread about it once for the legend of mir servers but searching for that could take sometime lol, a quick explanation would be nice.

Its not illegal to host a server. It is illegal to host a server which infringes on the owners copyright. If the emulator you are talking about uses code or other resources from, Sony is it? - that were gained unlawfully, then its in clear violation of copyright law.

If however the emulator is completely self written, uses nothing from the original and is a clear distinct work. Then the hosting aspect is fine.

There are however, probably more issues than the simple hosting of a server. For example, are they distributing a client which uses Sony's graphics? Are they modifying or instructing the modification of files which in doing so, would violate some sort of terms of use? Etc.
