After rambling on here for years, im finally getting a shuttle pc (afta getting my overdraft extended)

the shuttle iv decided on is the Shuttle DVO SG33G5M Deluxe

http://us.shuttle.com/G5_3300m.aspx#

looks prity sweet, at just under £300.

it already has a nice onboard graphics card. so i dont need one of those yet.

iv looked at these from komplett..

Intel Core™ 2 Duo E8200 2.33GHz, Socket LGA775, 6MB, 1333Mhz, BOXED w/fan (£119)

Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 250GB SATA2 16MB 7200RPM (£40)

i also need some ram. 2gb+ with really nice speed (since my graphics will run off it too.)

iv got a budget for these 3 component of about £200, if these dont look good, then please also recommend different processor/harddrive too!

Also. apart from these 3 components. what else might i need to get my pc all sorted?
will be ordering the box and components tomorrow hopefully.

its just a smaller pc.

also, i went to a little pc shop yesterday to check prices. and he told me that the processor FSB needs to be the same as the ram. is this true? iv neva heard this before.

because the only ram which is 1333mhz is DDR3, and i cant afford £250 for ram lol.

yeah i thought he was probly bullsh1tting me coz he didnt have any core 2 duos, just dual cores.

any recommendation on processor and ram to get?

i want something prity good, which will last me for atleast a few years and still run everything. (my current p4 is 4 years old and only just starting to go slow on games).

He was more than likely trying to bull his way, seeing as core 2 due(which is intel) and dual core(which is AMD) are both dual core processors. So the guy doesn't appear to know much.

Though with the FSB you do need if you put them in to ram of the same MHZ for them to work - though cross matching does sometimes work.

and 133Mhz you can get standard/DDR2/DDR3 if you know where to look for it.

oh. i was under the impression intel for dual cores, and core 2 duos. and the core2's are just better and newer.

Intel Pentium® Dual-Core E2180 2.0GHz, Socket LGA775, 1MB, 800MHz, BOXED w/fan

Intel Core™ 2 Duo E8500 3.16GHz, Socket LGA775, 6MB, 1333Mhz, BOXED w/fan

like so.

i like the buy, i'm tempted to build a shuttle PC, they can be quite powerful if done properly.

a lot of people who go to the LAN parties attend have shuttles, but if you have a beefy CPU and 2 GPUs in SLi or Crossfire, thats a lot of heat.... never mind what comes off the hard drive! Ive felt Western Digital Raptors that are unbearable to touch after being powered for a couple of hours.

Imagine that in such a small space... i dont see the point! I have a coolermaster dominator case for my rig and its awsome.. carries mounts for 7 120mm fans and 1 80mm fan for ultimate ventilation. everything in my rig is super cool, if i were to put that in a shuttle case i doubt it would be the same. Just my two penneth anyway.

i know what you mean. but im not an uber gamer, i play on games now and then. and aslong as they run smooth i dont care. i watch films, roam net, and listen to music more. which is why i went for the home theatre shuttle and not the p35 gaming shuttle.

iv heard raptors are hot, and very unstable too. i did want one, but afta i heard that i wldnt risk it for that price.

and i doubt ill eva need dual graphics cards. i just dont see a need for them. same as quad cores. its just overkill, hardware is moving alot quicker than game technology atm.

everythings arrived, but its all at my parents. so gotta wait for them to bring it up :(

Yeah raptors run very hot, due to the spin speeds.... access times are unreal, the fastest SATA2 drive i could find had an access time of 8.5miliseconds and the raptors which are still only SATA1 has access times of 4.2miliseconds. As for reliability, ive never known anyone personaly whose had a problem, but they do come with 5 year warranties so if you keep your most important stuff backed up should never be a problem. for me i have a 120mm fan directly in front of my hard drive bays which keep all my current drives cool, so should keep a raptor cool too if i ever decide to get one

i find about a 25-35% increase in overall performance using SLi over non SLi... my X2 4200 CPU is my main weak link at the moment, but gonna get the X2 6400 Black Edition which should sort that out!!! Was gonna go phenom, but MSI have failed to get that processor working with my board so gonna lay off Quad Core for a while.

just looking at your posts again, how much did you pay for your RAM...?
I got this stuff http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MY-058-GL&groupid=701&catid=8&subcat=813 and its superb, and the price for 2GB matched pairs is stunning... i paid a few quid more than the current marked price, but only a few quid mind you!!!

i payed £35. seems like really good ram. but im no expert.

my next buy is a graphics card now. then my shutle shld be sorted.

Yeah, i built a system for my mates wife with that exact same RAM as you bought, was about £50ish quid back then tho when i did it, but its ran faultless so your in pretty safe hands with that...!! but RAM is uber cheap at the moment, the stuff that i bought for mine, was considering as its only 32 quid now to get another 2GB.

Its either another 2GB RAM or a copy of Unreal Tournament 3 in time for the next LAN im attending in May!

I upgraded my PC from an old athlon XP based system to the X2 Dual Core in May last year, and back then as i was strapped for cash i bought generic elixer ram from scan.co.uk and it was £60 for 2GB... when i spotted the GeiL RAM october, which is what i have now i quickly orderd sum (was £42 at the time, is now £32 lol), and flogged the elixer on Ebay! Couldnt beleive that low latency, quality ram ended up costing me less than basic generic ****. madness!!! Even the PC6400 corsair dominator which was well over £200 for 2GB last year is down to nearly half that.

im running vista, with 2gb of ram (as you know). and when being idle its using 35% of my ram, (about 3% of my cpu).

why is this? its a fresh install. the only thing i can think of is the integrated gfx card using 128mb up.

35% of 2 GB would be about 600ish MB i think! i beleive, from experience, that vista allocates system memory to Vram, as when i ran an oem version of ultimate on my old machine, it said the video card had 256MB vram available when quite clearly it didnt, it was a radeon 9600XT 128MB... so if it doubles the ram, then 128MB would be shared, another 128MB additional allocated to Vram which is 256MB leaving approx 300-400MB unnaccounted for, which is more than likely just your OS system services and resident running proccesses.

Im running XP pro SP2 and it is currently using 421MB (20% ish) of physical system ram idle which sounds about right taking into account your Vram requirements. As for the CPU usage, mine spikes from 0 to 6% under idle so i wouldnt worry about that either......
