Well, i was trying to bend a pin back into place on my 40 gig hard drive, when it snapped off -_-

So my question is, would my hard drive still work without one of the pins which the IDE cable plugs into, or connects to??

Cheers, i hope it does because i would much rather have a 40 gig HDD then a 20 gig one :P

I cant see it myself but just give it a try, cant see it having any longterm effects on the actuall stored data.

If it doesnt work you can repalce the the chip and the ports on it, you will need a special screwdriver bit, looks like a star. I wouldnt recommend doing it yourself tho because if you happen to take the wrong screw out you might break the vacum inside.

Bit of theory*

Inside you have the platter (where everything stored) and the little reader thing (forgotten name). That reader is one smoke particle off the platter, so if you break the vacum and a bit of dust gets on the platter, its gonna knacker the harddrive when it gets to the reader.

Argh, oki cheers :) i am now formatting it, then ill install windows and see what happens. If was my second hard drive, but where i kept taking the IDE cable in and out, it had bent a pin. Which has made me snap 2 doubpe IDE cable's i had already :( so i would like it to work so i don't have to change the hard drive and take the ide cable and snap it lal -_- its a hard drive which doesn't like me... :P

Thanks again, i supose it doesn't hurt to try, unless it's a mixture of electrics and water ^__^
