What did you do at Uni and what job did you get?

I did plain Computer Science as I really didn't have a clue what sort of IT I wanted to lead into.

I'm now working on integrated software development but when I started the idea was to do a wide area of things and specialise where needed as part of a graduate scheme, I ended up in the programming route as I took to it quickly.

What I will say is a degree won't prepare you for working in the industry as well as first hand experience and specific qualifications, I was so out of my depth when I started work it wasn't funny.

As Mapa says, if you want to go down the Networking side then experience is going to be better for you.

Software/Developer/Designer side then Uni is a good place to start.

But the only problem at the moment, as Mapa has said IT jobs are hard to get because that many people are going into IT and that many companies are tightening their belts not many jobs become available, and when they do hundereds of people apply.

Most who come out of uni with a CS degree are, as it doesn't quite prepare you for the role. After all Computer Science is mainly based around development and not for a technical support role, hence it was moved from a GNVQ back in the early 90s to a degree level.

Very true, before I left the company I was working for. We were getting people who should have been working in consultancy applying for a level 1 support role, at the moment it is very difficult to get into the role. One being since the recession hit and a lot of smaller company's that specified in certain areas going under, or being bought out by bigger corporate company's and then those company's not employing as they all ready have the staff to deal with the roles.

Be ready for dealing with a lot of grief with regards to CapGemini, before I changed jobs Capgemini was one of our biggest contracts and we had to deal with some stupid people who worked for them. But most of our work came in from Poland, when they changed their support for LBC from the UK to Poland.

Also be ready for changing roles a lot, as I here they are very good at switching what you do at a moments notice.

Yeah ive heard stuff about the switching rolls bit, can i ask what company you work for? and when you say you have a contract with Cap Gem was that like for consuling or our ICT helpdesk side?

What they paying you?

Oh and gratz.

I'm picking up £200 a week atm and only working 7:00 - 12:00 Mon - Friday which i think is pretty good considering im still only 17 and getting £200 a week. I get 7.44/h other people get £8 thats only because im employed through Manpower which take £1 of you lol :S just imagine if i was full time i would get just over £300 a week i believe? :)

nice mate, my stepdad used to work as a consultant for capgemini for aaaages went up inside the company a few years ago he left to be the director for the england side of another consultancy company using oracle
:) good money im unsure about what to do, almost finished my degree in business management lol so who knows what il do

Mr Nice Guy!

How much you been paid hell if you don;t mind me asking?

i do 2nd/3rd line support and massively underpaid...!

£200 a week ^^^^^^^

Jesus mate, that is badly underpaid for S2/3 support. I was on 17k for S1 support, which was serverly underpaid for the company I was working for. So had to leave as couldn't continue to be paid at that rate, especially with the cost of living the way it is now.

If the company is struggling, the worse you can do is stay with them until they go under, if at they go under. As getting a new job in a similar role in Sheffield is a bloody nightmare, I went for an interview about 6 weeks ago and they told me about how hard it has been for them as well. For a simple S1 position, they where getting something like 5000+ applications for it and a good 70% of them were over qualified for the job.

It's a struggling time at the moment in IT.

If you want to get into IT, you don't go to Uni as it's a waste of your time and money. Most companies won't employ someone straight out of Uni, as the lack of people skills and experience for the job.

What is S1&2? is that like Tier 1 and 2? and about the interview bit about being over qualified ive heard that a few times just never understood it how can you be over qualified for a job and surely if you are "over qualified " why wouldnt they take you on seeing as you really good for that job role lol

A good example of someone being over qualified for a job is like Gordon Ramsey working behind the scenes at Burger King.

I used to work for a company called BT Engage IT, who were formally known as Lynx Technology. They do both ICT and consultancy for Cap but only on the hardware side of things now, though they used to do a lot of the managed services for Cap.

Basically over qualified is someone going for a Tier 1 job which is basically desktop support and being able to do network administration and consultancy.

The reason for over qualified people being less likely to get jobs which don't require those qualifications is that they're likely to get bored/not feel challenged etc and thus are more likely to look for a job elsewhere where their skills/experience etc will be put to better use, therefore the recruiter then has to find someone new to fill the position again when they leave...it's bad business.
