I'm very new to this. I have some very simple icons and graphics which I need to vectorize so they can be blown up to any size for printing and still look perfect.

I've got illustrator and photoshop - what do I do?

Here is an example of what I have

The circle is a photoshop shape so is already a vector but it's the xbox controller I need to fix up

there's different ways to do that, one is to simply redraw the logo in illustrator or fireworks with the pen tool and cross your fingers that it doesn't take too long. Another option is something like Corel Trace, which will try to convert anything into vectors, but the results can be iffy sometimes. Flash has the same tool built in but it can be even less accurate.

use this http://vectormagic.com/home u have to make an account but u get 2 free downloads the last time i used it

thats quite a simple shape to make in illustrator tbh.

in illustrator you'd need to use about 5 shapes, then just curve them to match and merge together. no need for photoshop at all.

BUT YOU DIDN'T HAVE TO CUT ME OFF!

No but seriously, pen tool is stupidly: easy click for straight lines and click, hold and drag for curved lines.

It's the dragging I don't get. It moves in mysterious ways.

Just a matter of using it until you're good. I got used to it by rendering images whilst I was on Planet-Renders. Got me some good experience!

With a simple shape like this ur better of just using brush tool , 100% hardness and just use circles and draw over the top of an original controller .

I have more shapes than this, a bit more difficult. Guess I'll just learn the pen tool
