OK i would like to make my own FTP from a home setup if it is pos,

What i would like to do is basically have a hard drive in my home (A big one) that i can store programs ect ect so people can download from it from the internet if they have the links,

Basically i don't want to pay a big price for a unlimited ftp i want to make my own!

Can it be done?

of course.

do you plan to let people upload?
if not, IIS is probably your easiest option. (web instead of ftp)

1. Get a dyndns/no-ip thingy if you have a dynamic ip.
2. Install IIS (comes with xp/vista)
3. In IIS manager setup a directory as a virtual directory eg /stuff that points to your C:\where your stuff is\
4. Now your friends should be able to goto http://your web address/stuff/ and see a directory listing.

for FTP, IIS has it but I don't remember the details... Serv-U is my favourite FTP Server.

you still have to find out if you have a static ip

setup your dyndns or no-ip anyway... so your users will use a domain name instead of an ip.

forward your router port 80 to your computer port 80.

start sharing your stuff.

Will this slow my computer & internet speed? & will the downloader get a good download speed to?

Yes it will, as you are activerly allowing people to download from your connection and as long as you have a decent machine with around 2gb mem and 2.4ghz cpu it shouldn't slow it down to much. Though not a great idea to use the same machine you use for surfing the net with.

Yes you have to map your directory... C:\stuff to http://something/stuff

Do a speedtest, then cap the upload speed based on the speedtest. This way, your leechers won't eat up your connection. Otherwise, 2+ simultaneous downloads will slow your internet down.

Any computer nowadays can host a web/ftp server without slowing down the computer.

PS: Non Windows Server machines (xp/vista?) have a limit of 10 simultaneous connections on IIS.

ill be running it on a 2nd pc that will be running win server 2003.

ty for all the info.

Buy some web hosting, unless you have a really high upload speed, which you probably won't.

If you have the same crap upload speed i have, people will be downloading from your computer at like 50kb/s. That's also with only one person downloading.

Infact, if you want to have somewhere to host your mir files, i have web hosting that can be used.

/Ash

-The problem with most peoples connection is that they have 1000kb/s or so download speeds, but have terrible upload speeds, so while you may be able to download at 1000kb/s, you may find you can only upload at 50kb/s, so limiting downloaders to get info from you at 50kb/s, where they could get their full 1000kb/s from even a terrible web hoster.

Thats also linked into why alot of people get dedicated places with a high upload speeds to run their Mir Sever, as the problem with hosting at home, is the Upload speed. Usualy anyway.

mhh also an easy way of doing it is XAMPP it makes ur pc to a webserver. if u wanna give ppl only 1 time a download u not need to use a dyndns.org account or something.

install xampp put the file that u wanna give to other ppl in the HTDOCS folder and give the link the one u wanna give the file (also work with static ip or dyndns.org) the link looks like (http://urIP/xyz.rar) if u wanna give him xyz.rar

don't really need xampp, as iis is already there and it's quite easy to configure.

apache is good too. But for this purpose, IIS is still easier.
