herro.

about a month back i was contemplating getting a barebone. but now i think of it, would i actually be wasting my money?

i dont really play many games, i always get the newest ones out and play em for a while, but i always get bored of offline games too quickly.

so i mainly use my pc for music, web, alot of movies and tv, simple games (flash), and on occasion an online game (l2 being the most taxing).

MY QUESTIONS ARE:

1.If i were to get a laptop instead, would it be more money well spent than wasting money on a high end barebone which im not going to put to its full potential?

2.Can laptops run new games smoothly at all?

3.If i were to get a new high spec laptop (eg 1.47ghz DC, 2gb ram, 128mb nvidia), how long would it be untill the software, games would not run smooth enough on it?

4.What price would i be looking at for a decent laptop?


I take computer science, so i should really know all this, but the last time i bought a laptop was 6 years ago (still got it) it cost me £1000 back then, but i was never really impressed with it.

If you could answer my four questions id be grateful.

In general a laptop will cost you more than the equivalent tower, in my experience anyway.

A laptop to do what you want can be as little at £400 for a decent model ut I'd try to get a duel core 1.6-1.8ghz at least for longevity and a 256mb graphics card. Easily possible with about £400

yeah i realise laptops are more expensive. but want something that saves space. and either a barebone or laptop wld do that.

i really like the look of the new hp pavillion laptops, they are about £500 for a middish spec. are they a ripoff? i know they are well made laptops, but i dont wanna be ripped off.

No experience of Hp Laptops, very little of laptops at all really apart from researching and buying 2 for people, one was an Acer, the other a Dell, neither over £400 and both capable of playing current games, both duel core 1.8ghz and both with 1gb ram and 256mb hard drives.

I suggest you use www.pricerunner.co.uk - search for laptops then menu bar appears on left where you can select things like ram, ghz, OS, etc....shortlist and then research each in shortlist or publish here and people will soon tell you which is best

what is a barebone? sounds like some sort of pr0n to me..

and also, how much could i get a decent PC for? whether i get it made or not. and also for the same stuff as farril pretty much part from i would be using it for online games more

Bare-bones is a computer case with the bare minimum hardware in it to make it work......look at novatech.co.uk for examples.

I've never paid over £400 for a PC tower from Novatech and have no problems so far.

To put it simply; laptops aren't made for gaming, they lack the cooling ability of desktops. I also think they are horrible to play on, it just doesn't feel right but maybe thats just me. They are also overpriced for what you get compared to desktops.

With the way PC gaming is going (advancing quite rapidly) it doesn't take long for your system to fall behind the times.

I have a decent laptop (Dual Core, 256MB GFX, 2GB RAM) and i doubt very much i could play something like crysis on it well.

Personally i would go for a bare bones system, also a lot easier to upgrade.

Id just get a desktop PC, it would be a considerable amount cheaper and more ''future proof''

@Tai, if its self built, you can get a pretty decent desktop for about 400-600 quid, depending on what sort of games you will be playing.
