I can't really explain it cuz i aint got the time, wait until urbans on he'll probbably explain it all to you in full detail.
I'm not totally sure about this but this is what I have.
I have a wireless internet box connected to my PC, then if my Dad wants to go on his laptop he plugs in this little bluetooth thingy and he can get on net. If you look through PC World for Wireless Internet kits or something. I got all mine with Wanadoo Wireless Internet (Don't ask, we get it free for my Dad's work :P).
My message is all a bit jumbled really, soz dude. Someone who knows what they're talking about will post soon :P

It depends on what your modem is and what kind of options you want.
Assuming your modem is USB, then you simply get a crossover category 5 cable and connect the 2 computers, making sure the ip/subnet stuff is right and that internet connection sharing is enabled on the pc with the modem attached.
Or you can go wireless, in which you would buy 2 network cards and just go ad hoc (without a wireless ap/router).

Or, if your lucky enough to have an ethernet based router/modem you could get 2 normal CAT5 Cables, and a Switch/Hub (unless your really lucky and the router/modem has an inbuilt swtich/hub) and then plug them all in and set them all up with ips/subnet etc etc (some routers have a DHCP server, which makes this easier if you dun intend to do port forwarding)
I would reccomend going for the swtich/hub + cat5 cables even if you have a USB modem, then if you get another machine sometime or whatever, you dun need to reinvest your money, you can just get another cable (cheap++) and just plug it in.
