Well look at it this way... which OS was it designed to run on ;)

The problem with getting the 1.4/1.9 mirserver to run successfully on Linux has been the Borland Database Engine, of which on my last look there was no Linux version of.

Apparently though it has been done before, although I am not brilliantly sure how as it was never detailed. I merely saw the post one of the first times I EVER visited this board (I was 15 back then). I think it was LOMCN user BabyBear that managed it, consider tracking him down.

Watch your mouth/finger :P, I can't count the years past since then on one hand so shoo futile being.

And yes you can run most of the individual server components on a Linux machine, except the DBServer which will obviously need to be on a seperate windows box for BDE (as already mentioned).

well with cenegade enigne(the one that makes game run on linux) appertly can make it to have windows commpanets run as well, so now it is actualy possible... fedora+red hat would be the best bet, to run cengeda on. and it should be possible with boralnd(if you can change few bits here and there).

It seems nobody here even grasps the concept of what it takes to run a piece of Windows software in Linux (with the exception LeoCrasher, I would hope). A good way to learn more about how the software operates on Linux would be to read about how Wine handles calls from the program can be found here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wine_(software)

This gives you an idea on HOW it works. For the record, most applications that run under wine (and the variants) have some trouble. I personally wouldn't try running Windows Native applications under linux if I expected any sort of stability.

Why would you want to run the mir server on linux?

Toxick: Have you ever tried running the MIR2 server in linux?

I have run multiple windows programs on linux but never server files that are designed to run on windows... like UniTY said there will be no stability at all unless you seriously know what you are doing...

Use Wine like UniTY said its ok for gettin some things to work but some of programs have issues. Linux is good for people who are backroom developers i use it alot for work purposes but i live in a cuboard 24/7 lol

lol yes thank you I'm fully aware of wine, but I don't think Heaven needed to know details since lack of BDE (and therefore any paradox+dbase support) would effectively stunt any chance of success without the addition of a networked windows box (making running the other components on the linux box a tad pointless).

EDIT: Heres an old piccy I dug up. Doesn't really prove anything but its relevant lol.

i don't know much, but i remember little talks about linux and windows applications, ain't there window emulators for linux, to run things like this on?
i suppose stability is what makes emulators kinda useless
