Emmm i'm pretty sure userinit is one of the startup processes that starts up your computer from when you log on/start your pc.
My only guess is that you have a virus that is starting more than one of this process cuasing your pc to run slow and not start up properly.

userinit.exe : file is the standard and essential component of Windows NT 4/2000/XP and Windows Server 2003 operating systems. It runs automatically on every system's startup and terminates itself shortly after the start. It is a critical process, which starts immediately after a user succesfully logs on, and executes specific logon commands, runs scripts, starts certain programs, re-establishes network connections, loads Windows graphical interface and much more.

As for that windows doesnt load properly i would format. I had the same problem after installing windows xp. Have you recently downloaded any software off the internet wich may have had some spyware or a virus with it? Also power cuts may cause files to be damaged and windows xp not to star properly

That program is not a virus originally. It is a windows component but then again you might have a virus that infects other files , in this case it might have infected some of youre system files so windows wont run properly anymore. When i had that problem i waited for round 20 minutes untill windows loaded up fully. I suggest you do the same and reply if it will finally run.

EDIT: If that file is infected then most likely the virus will run with it because after it infected the file it is a part of the .exe file so might be a dll file wich is loaded in the windows shell with the .exe file . For an example , Spyware known as "NewDotNet" infects the svchost.exe file and makes its dll file a part of the .exe file and it is loaded into the windows shell. If youre dealing with a virus like that then its quite a pain to remove it from youre computer.

Ty for reading
(got a little bit carried away :P)

Thanks for all the help guys, o_O Didn't expect all this.. I really can't reformat, so much important things to lose!

-

Shortly after all this started I had a dialog box that wouldn't go away, "Cannot find execution path/file missing." or something, if I clicked OK, it would vanish, then reappear. The name of this on task manager was RunDLL32 or simular, maybe that was something to do with it?

Keep it coming please u people :)

Update.
Just rebooted comp and on screenshot 2 of main post. After that box comes up and I click OK, all the UserInit processes vanish and my system is back to speed.

- Still no task bars or desktop icons :(

if it is typed exactly like u said (i mean the caps eg."RunDLL32" i think it is spyware coz its usually all in small letters like "rundll32" my suggestion is

1. Go to safe mode (that is done by continiously pressing the F8 button)
2. Scan youre computer for spyware and viruses
3. If nothing works then try windows repair

Already scanned for both of them, and the 'rundll32' stuff was spelt like that.

What's windows repair?
