Basically, I just tried out using brushes to remove pieces of a black layer covering a background. The effect it can out with was quick and effective:

You should drop the opacity on scanlines to 10%-20% imo.
Its not a signature, so im not bothered about detail.

Basically I create this, or a similar effect do the following:

Add a background to a blank image.

Make a new layer

Fill it black

Select brush tool (and an appropriate brush - i used one of Adobe Photoshop Elements 3's generic brushes)

Change brush mode to 'clear'

Gradually remove the black layer, revealing the under laying image untill your satisfied with the effect.

Nice and easy :)

Hmm Wittin how the hell did you get so good -.-. I remember when you first started making graphical things - you've come a long way lol. You signature is also fantastic apart from the "Wittin Reloaded" bit which looks too squashed (get rid of the Reloaded :P)
Anyway fantastic job and it's nice to see you online =p

Thanks, and yea - things have moved on from the old 'ripped image & text'. To be honest i don't know how i've improved because i don't even use photoshop very often.

Here's my latest piece, i have little idea how i can improve the image itself. Also i will update the text when i find something that goes.

I've decided to call it 'Conflict of element'

I also like your piece 'conflict of element'... but rather the top one than the 2nd one.

Wouldent it look better, just making the background with lots of soft brushes then just adding layers because as it builds it adds more detail.

Your method is get a wallpaper, make a layer on top fill it black get the rubber out and start rubbing the black bits away...
