Network Quota

Quick question I got for the techys - ...

Is there a way to control quota on a shared connection between two computers connected to the internet via a router via a cable moden, where one computer recieves wi-fi and there other is wired?

I think you can set up QoS on the router so that one computer would have the upper hand on the connection, so when the main PC isn't using anything, the secondary PC would be able to use all the connection, but as soon as the main PC would start using the connection, the secondarys PC's speed will drop as low as there is left after the Main PC.

Something like that anyways =p.

I had no idea you got mess around with the QoS =/ errm. I always thought that was a passive service which is only used by programs that are capable of utilising it. Prioritises around 10% bandwith doesn't it?

ps - If it'd help anyone I'm using a Motorola Surfboard SB5100 Modem, and a USRobotics 5462 Router.

You will need a partcilaury good/expensive router for comprehensive QoS and throttling support.

Alternatiely build your own router... which will probzo cost a similar amount come to think of it. Might just be easier to limit the network interfaces on the individual computers though software similar to NetLimiter.
