Networking - Help please

Right,

I dont have a clue what i am doing basically.

I have a laptop and PC.

I have network cards in both PC and laptop.

I have a external modem. USB into main pc.

Then a network cable going from moden into laptop.

When i go to network connections on laptop it says connected?

But i cannot access the internet?

Am i doing this totally wrong or what?

Try connecting the two computers together by the network cards. (Needs to be a Cross over cable) Then share the internet connection on your main PC and it should work .

Ethernet Cable same as you use if you have x-box live or ps2 online, but needs to be cross over, not the straight one, search ethernet cross over cable on google, im sure you'll fine one

they sell them in computer shops etc, depending on size needed, the 10metre ones go for around £5 from where i live

You need to go into CP>network connections>said connection properties> check sahre this connection

And use a cross over cable.
