I use a combination of 3ds max, after effects and photoshop. Ive taken a couple of screenies showing what I see in the 3D before the render, and then my comp stack in AE before and after iveadded the eye candy

the ice blast spell looks really good. not sure about earthquake tho.

Earthquake was going to shake the screen on Met so it should be more dramatic if matt and cheeky have got it working on 4H.

yes they are maybe a step by step video tutorial or guide is inorder so we can create more skills between the community i would be up for learning this.

like u see in airports ill show my out cum later :PAnyone can learn max but it takes time and patience. Imo its the easiest 3d package to learn as it has a great interface. The best way to get it is to dl the official demo and get a keygen/crack. I have one for max 2009 but i think max 2010 is out now im not sure if u can get the 2009 demo off the official site so u mite have to torrent it.
I can make a vid tutorial on making something but it may be hard to follow because u wont be able to see what shortcut keys i use. You will need all the software i mentioned above however i.e max, ps and ae

as far as learning max is concerned, you can download(torrent) '3ds Max 2009 Beyond the Basics' which is a large set of vey well explained professional tutorials.
It will have everything you will need to be able to produce what you want, tho it MIGHT be a little hard to follow for beginners, but you shouldnt really have any problems with it.
I've been using 3d programs and photoshop etc. for years now, and I agree it has a good interface, tho the amount of tools you can use and combinations you can have with them can be a little frightening at first. You just need to not be put off by that.
Also after seeing these threads i've decided to work on some spells myself.
