It's real hit and miss bringing this problem to cubase as I doubt anyone here will be able to help, but you never know..
Well firstly here are my system specifications:
CPU: P4 1.6Ghz
RAM: 512MB
Graphics: GeForce FX 5200
Sound: Intel Intergrated audio
But I already know this is not a hardware issue as I have been running Cubase SX3 fine for almost 2 years now. So anyway, I reformatted yesterday and reinstalled Cubase today, started on my project, did 3 tracks, all MIDI, one drums, two piano. Then I minimized Cubase, opened another application (a very low stress one). Came back to Cubase, added another track, went to play it back and all MIDI sounds had gone. Since then, I've restarted twice, browsed google, checked all around Device Setup and VST connections and I cannot find a single problem. VSTi's seem to work fine. Also opening MIDI files outside of cubase works fine too.
Hope I gave you enough information
