pc constantly fking up. need a solution.

been doing it for a while now, i restart my pc/shut it down for the night, and the next thing it does is freeze on the windows xp loading screen. it looks like its loading, but never gets past it.

ive done atleast 3 FULL formats, and reinstalled windows each time.

this time i really didnt wanna loose everything again so i just deleted windows and installed a fresh, unfortunately it messed up my registry, so everything is being installed again.

anyway. does anyone know why its doing this?

i thought it might b coz of sp2, that was the last risky program (apart from a pc game) which i installed. and after a reboot later on it wldnt load.

if it is sp2, do i need it?

if its my HDD thats just getting old (coz it is), then thats ok, im buying another one anyway.

just aslong as you dont think its my proccessor, because i REALLY cant afford another one of thos right now.

Mate, i had this problem exactly earlier. It took 3 formats, until i figured out that the cause was service pack 2. This problem was directly after my graphics card problem, it appears my PC is slowly dieing on me -_-

I now have it working with service pack 2, i installed windows xp home, then installed service pack 2 straight after that, and now it works fine.

I suggest running your PC for a few days without service pack 2, and see what happens

This might not be much help, but i am pretty sure that the problem is caused by service pack 2 and corrupt/missing files.

Also, maybe it could have something to do with the hard drive? well, if the problem occurs for me again im going to try another hard drive because i dont really want to do anymore formats either

i realised something had fked up when i tryed to open notepad and it said one of my dlls cldnt be used. didnt want to download the dll since i shldnt need to, so i restarted my pc, and wldnt load after that.

anyway thanks, ill leave sp2 off for a while and see how it runs.

update: my pc is currently being a ******* to me, its refusing to run vlc, even though it was running fine a second ago. it keeps deciding to run at 100% CPU, even as soon as i boot up windows. and is just basically being slow.

im gonna be pissed off if this has anything to do with my proccessor!

That's a problem i've also had after fresh installs. Random programs not wanting to work, the CPU being used 100% by a system process, well the problem was, i was a noob back then and didn't unplug the internet cable before installing. When the setup installs and configures networking, the viruses that roam around have enough time to attack your vulnurable fresh install in the time you manage to boot up the PC and enable the firewall.

The loading but not going anywhere is a problem i had just a few weeks before my HDD first messed up on me, 1 month later, it started making bad sectors, and it wen't on from there untill i decided to replace it .

1. Run a drive check tool usually supplied by your HDD's manufacturer.
2. Make sure you unplug your internet cable from your PC before installing windows, unless ofcourse you have DSL or something which requires authentication or any other user input before it can be used (unlike cable).

this HDD is so old i dont even know where its from.

i have a dialup, but i didnt actually install kaspersky till a few hours later, though kaspersky didnt actually find anything?

do you think its actually anything wrong with my hardware? or just that viruses keep getting in there too quick?

atm kaspersky is being gay and either not loading, or when i loads it makes my pc slow to piss me off.

Well, i am currently using symantec client security, and once i installed windows and that, about half hour later it popped up saying it found a bitrose virus or something, the file was called vmdriver.exe (system file?).

Hopefully it isnt my hard drive dieing on me like my last one did, but i ordered it off ebay, second hand, so it could well be at the end of its time..

Farphit, mayb you should do a fresh format and install for one last time, and unplug your internet/network cable (like ragnar said) until you have a firewall and anti-virus installed. I personally dont think its caused by a hardware fault (HDD), i think it has something to do with corrupt files, or a virus (software problem). But thats my opinion on the situation.

Unless you have to set up the dialup connection settings while installing windows, don't think any viruses could come through.

All leads me to beleive it's your HDD dying.

Kaspersky is probably slow because it has to scan stuff (read from the HDD), and when somethings messed up with reading from the HDD, it will go slow .

Run a check for bad sectors and general health of your HDD.

Disconnect everything appart from the mouse, keyboard monitor and power cables. Do a complete reinstall, load up all your drivers, do a disk defrag then start installing programs. If you have probelms at any point, strong possibility that it's one of the installed programs. If not, probly the internet.

With yours being as old as it is its likely to be the primary suspect. Also is the windows legit or a copied version?

if i REALLY do need a new HDD to fix these problems then ill get one this wk. but otherwise id rather avoid it for now, really strapped for cash atm.

k jus checked something, and when my pc loads it starts at 100% cpu, but soon as i connect to the internet it drops down to 0%. this mean anything?

also, sometimes when i boot up it boots without a username, wont giv me the option to shutdown, jus log off. and task manager has (unknown) for the user. it also obviously says i dont have the correct permission to open user accounts or system program.

it does this like once every 5 times i load my pc up.

Defo sounds like a software problem. The 100% CPU usuage is caused by something running in the background, which shouldnt be i think.

Look in task manager, and when the CPU usuage is 100%, look under "proccesses" and see if you can spot the proccess running which is using a high amount of CPU.

well soon as i load my pc its hardly got anything running in proccesses, and nothing which looks like it shldnt b ther.

system idle proccess shows up as '80' under cpu. but thats when my pc is running at about 36% (got stuff downloading, msn, and itunes running atm)

is 80 a gd or bad figure? the rest are all either '0' or no higher than '4'

Well, my idle proccesses uses anywhere from 12-95% roughly, just checked it So i cant really see that being the problem.

And the rest of mine are anywhere from 0-6%, unless i have windows media player running, which uses around 40-90% at times -_-

iv got a feeling its something to do with kaspersky, it keeps finding random files in my system folder which its saying has a trojan, but befor i have chance to click 'skip' or 'disinfect' the screen goes off.

hasnt faulted me befor though, so i dont c why it shld now.

k i think iv found the problem.

msvps.exe runs at about 80 when my pc starts up. making my cpu 100%

soon as i connect to the internet, msvps.exe drops to 0 cpu and then kaspersky picks it up as having a trojan. it dont let me disinfect, only delete.

i dont want to delete it till i know what it is, as im prity sure its a key m$ program.

any ideas why its doing it? or how to stop it doing it?

edit: kk iv got rid of that file, and installed 30 day trial of superadblocker. hopefully it'll do some good. when i start my pc now it doesnt start at 100% cpu.

whilst my pc seems to be running almost normal (touch metal), can i go back to my original question. why do u think it got stuck at the loading screen? maybe just a file that got deleted? or sp2 or something else?

Hmm, i would say so. That site basically tells you to get rid of it.

I havnt got this "msvps" on my computer under proccesses. So it could well be a virus.

Just backup your files before you remove anything to be sure.

yeah, thats sort of a problem since my external blew up last wk, making me loose everything. so iv sorta got used to redownloading every program 3 times now.

anyway, all removed, and running smooth so far.
