Ive been looking about for a while for a few things to upgrade my old system.

Ive got a AMD Athlon XP 3000+, 512 Pc2700 Ram ( Want a new gig stick of 3200 ), Asrock K7S8X ( could anyone suggest ram compatible ), and a Fx5200 peice of ****, so i need a new GFX. Was looking at the BFG 7800 GSOC for about 210 bucks, But i was looking to spend about 170ish + i couldnt decide between ATI or nvidia, ATI seem to have a faster GPU setup compared to nvidia faster memory setup, could anyone shed some light on this please. Would it really be worth upgrading this system to that. Also i need a new case as my old one has a 350watt power supply so i would feel safer with a higher watt supply.

Welcome to suggestions :).

All in all i was lookin to spend about £250. - the price of the ram my sister is paying for that :).

Cheers.

Was just looking about and found a BFG 6800 GSOC 256mb card for 170 and a PowerColor ATI radeon X850 XT 256 card for 170 aswell. Would these be comaptible with my system and what would be the better buy? Also would my system take Dual Channel ram kits? Never knew what they were for haha, need to do some learnin :)

Well, just from the upgrade you're going to spend 250+ another 60 for a total of around 310.

Why not spend 350 and upgrade the PC you have (keep the old HDD and case) for something A LOT better?

Yeah i know it would blow it away, just looking to se if i can get a AMD 64 Socket 939 3200+ and a mobo for the same price on ebay then i will look into it. You think i should try and sell my old system to get some cash for it aswell and just build a new one all together?

Updated with a much better config.

Ye, I would sell your old system (minus the hdd/cdrom/case or buy new ones).

Was havin a think today and was looking about, if i was going to build a new system (mobo, ram, gfx, cpu) then i might aswell make it not bad. So for 400 bucks if i can scrape that together at some point in the future :) i found
Opteron 144, Asus A8N-SLI, BFG GeForce 7600 GT OC 256mb GDDR3 PCI. And could ya suggest some ram for that? + is that all good aye?

I replaced the old one with the new one so there would be no confusion.

I'd get a A64 3000+ or 3200+, the 144's extra 512kb cache isn't worth the price difference now.

I'd choose another mobo too.

Well ive read they are good for overclocking and can reach FX-57 speeds, other than that i am gettin it a 10er cheaper than a AMD 64 3200+ Retail @ £108 and can get the opteron for £98, so would that work out better? and how much you reckon for the motherboard? Cause i worked it out at 140 just at a rough guess, if i can get it cheaper then mint :) and what ya think about the card? could you work up a system with that for 350ish ya think? Or maybe a Opteron 146 for £120 just need to see when ive got the money and build the system over a little time.

Oh, didn't know you were going to overclock. Asus sucks for that, except for a newer ATI board.

Minus the 100 for the operton, that leaves 250 for memory, GFX, mobo, and power supply. This is what I came up with:

Well if i build the system with that proccesor, most people say they are stable to overclock, i would need to look into that, might try and just get a proccesor off ebay a bit cheaper, mibby a AMD 64 3500+ and then build round about that. Cheers for the help will get back to ya if i need anymore. Oh yeah.. are the 7600 series actually anygood?
