on my ps3 i have an optical out. on my pc i have a line in, audio out, optical out etc, my monitor doesnt have speakers.

i want to convert the optical cable from my ps3 to a 3.5mm jack which goes in my line in on my pc, and then get the sound coming out of the speakers attached to my audio out in my pc. aswell as my pc also giving sound through the speakers.

is this possible? im not really sure what a line in does.

i have a tv which have speakers, and this works fine for both my ps3 and pc (ps3 having sound thru tv, and pc sound thru speakers) but i want to get rid of my tv and use my monitor as i like it more.

Should be fine a line input is like a mic input so it takes signal into your sound card then shoves it out the green mini jack out your speakers. Should work fine mate.

I know this is old but i wanted todo the same thing and went into a audio store and was told you cannot convert optical to 3.5mm since obviously optics is glass the only way todo it is to have a sound system that can take optical in.

PS3's can output through both connections hdmi and the ps3 av port, SO if you use the hdmi for your monitor and your red and white from your ps3 av cables and use a twin phono to 3.5mm connector your done. Also you could just buy one of these http://www.maplin.co.uk/digital-to-analogue-audio-convertor-504890.

If you really have the money buy an onkyo amp, the Pioneer VSX-1018 is much better tho and about the same kinda price
