I just wanted to share my thoughts on the refining system introduced and offer some constructive feedback on the topic. Firstly, thank you very much for adding the system. I love refining and was very grateful for the addition.

I’ll start by saying I’m a keen refiner and have been on every server I have played. I like to think I’m experienced as a result. On Euro and USA Mir, as long as you had a reasonable recipe, the refine would almost always work. From hundreds of refines, I would estimate the chances of success were as high as 80-90%. This seems high, but if you think about it you would never be able to achieve +20 stats on a weapon without such high chances. Even at a 90% success rate, odds dictate that the weapon is likely to break before you get +10 stats, never mind +20. You would still need MAJOR luck to get anywhere near 20 refine upgrades in a row.

Now, I often see private servers fall into the same trap of having much lower odds. Owners seems to think that even 50/60% success rate is too high. From testing over the last few days I’ve estimated the odds to be 30-40% chance of success, with 5% chance of a +2 upgrade. This is fine if you didn’t want anyone to get massively increased weapons, but here are my thoughts on having such low odds of success:

Lower level weapons – Lets take a Mage Staff as an example. You need to refine it 3 times before it can even compete with a War Mage Staff which drops regularly here. At a 30% chance of success on each upgrade, you have an extremely low chance of pulling this off and most will break going 2-5, then the rest will break going 2-6.

You could try refining the War Mage Staff instead, but you get the same issue. You need to upgrade it 3 or 4 times before it can compete with a Dragon Staff realistically. I have now refined 15 War Mage Staffs on this server. ONLY ONE has gone to 1-8, the rest broke. I am now skint as a result and in hindsight I should have just saved up for a Dragon Staff. You could say I’ve not found the right formula, but this is a private server and I doubt people will spend years figuring out recipes like they did on Euro.

High level weapons – Put simply, people won’t refine these. With the low odds as I’ve described, no one is going to risk putting a rarer weapon in for refine as there is a high chance it will just break.

Conclusion – There are no types of weapon that will be refined in its current state.

I think this is a shame. Refining has always been in place for the crafters on Mir. It was a viable option for people to get powerful weapons who didn’t want to boss hunt. The boss hunters get the 3-13 Blades of Sorcery, the refiners get the 2-13 Mage Staffs.

As a final note, things seem very different here. Black Iron Ore has always famously had NO EFFECT on the % success rate and only affected dura on the weapon. But on here even if you just use 1 piece of Black Iron Ore at Purity 1, the dura of the weapon isn’t affected. So it seems like a waste to use any more than 1 piece of BIO currently as it doesn’t change anything. So I’m wondering whether BIO affects success rate here.

If you could shed any more light on the system I’d be grateful. I may have just been unlucky but it certainly seems overly difficult as it stands and I genuinely don’t believe it will get used.

Refining is bolloxed alright, whatever they did to it.

As you mentioned its a complete waste to refine with current odds and without a doubt you waste alot more than you get out of it.
