i have an nvidia 8800 512mb gfx card. but the fan is VERY noisy.

the gfx card is right up against the wall of my case, so it cant stick out.

are they any available fans which are silent, and dont stick out to replace the 8800 one i have?

What do you mean by "sticks out"?

the depth of it. as my gfx card is right up against the wall of my case, if it becomes even 1mm more in height then it wont fit.

basically i need to be able to take out the current old casing and fan, and replace with a new silent one, which is the same size.

How is it against the wall of your case? Are you sure it's not catching on something? They shouldn't be noisy.

If it's going too fast you should be able to slow it, but if it's up against your case then the fan is probably trying to compensate for the fact it's got no room to breathe.

this is the inside of it.

as you can see theres a pci and pci-e slot. im using the pci-e slot, which means its right up against the wall. gives me 1mm from the edge of the case.

are there any programs to check the temperature its running at, and also to slow the fan down.

iv taken the cover off for now, to see if it decides to quiet down.

Ah right, what an annoying layout lol. Some of the latest graphics cards have stock heatsinks twice that width.

You should have a wire that goes into the heatsink/board to monitor the temp, which can be done through the GPU control panel (i.e. display, advanced etc).

If the temp is too high that'll be the reason, the RPM on the fan will increase to try and compensate.

SpeedFan is the program to use when checking the temperature.

I'm pretty sure the AC coolers are quite thin and should fit. Search for a review or something - may be someone has specified the exact size of the cooler or may be even the size is mentioned on the AC website.

Sawell, the default coolers on graphic cards are most of the time rather noisy. Especially with the cheaper ones like Club 3D and such.

with the 8800 there isnt any setting.

iv read up on a program called rivatuner, but it doesnt work with vista 64 (coz of digital signing)

iv jus read the only otha way to change fan speed is in the bios. so im gonna take a peek there.

I'm using Rivatuner on Vista 64bit Ultimate.

I'm surprised theres even enough room for the graphics card fan to pull air in.

-Serves you right for buying a Shuttle PC. Lol.

Even have you a link for Riva.. http://www.techpowerup.com/downloads/724/RivaTuner_x64_signed_Drivers.html

Thats a page where it tells you about applying the digital signatures.

i did alot of research before buying one, and no one seemed to have any problems with the one i have, even with the 8800 installed. so i went ahead and got one.

whats an optimum temperate that the gpu should be at? mines running at about 50c +/- 1

but like i said, its never crashed on me yet, even though i play very high tasking games.

on another note, iv found that the noise is a mixture of the gpu fan, and the cpu fan. and the cpu fan is the one thats an annoying buzzing noise, where as the gpu is more of a normal air going through it noise (if u kno what i mean)

i cant change the cpu fan i dont think, as its specially made for shuttles

as you can see.

Final note. when changing the cpu fan speed in the bios, i can change it down to ultra-low and theres hardly any noise (atm its running on smart mode)

if i change the setting to ultra low, and boot up windows to check out what the temperate goes up to, cld it damage anything?

EDIT:
iv now changed my fan settings to ultra-low. and it seems to have really quietened down. All i can hear now is the gpu fan, which is actually bearable on its own.

Im monitoring my temperatures with HW Monitor (seems more accurate than speedfan). And atm my cpu seems to be at a healthy 33c on idle.
