How long is six chinese characters in english?

Im translating the rename weapon script and this is what i got.

名字不能超过6个汉字。=
The name cannot surpass 6 Chinese characters.

is that the same as our six characters?

sometimes a chinese symbol represents 2 english chars, sometimes 1.
