Need some quotes or advices...

I was asked by a foreign company to UPDATE some of the features of my existing software. Not very complicated (can probably use my KaoriMIM) for example.

Right now I am not sure whether they want it in existing language or they want a total REMAKE in another language.

But putting the above aside... How much do you or other people charge for writing software.

Also anything on support? I might get calls/emails later on... their customer support... training, technical support, etc...

3 different quotes...
1. Just update in existing language.
2. Rewrite the whole thing in another language.
3. Support say 1 year.

Please give me some figures... It's pretty urgent. Thanks!

Well, you need to be very sure about the legal side of things.

For example, for the changes required, do they own the IP (if they are providing specs). Don't forget to charge by license per computer/per site. Never a one-off. Also, get a liability-limiting section in your agreement with this 'company'.

Unfortunately, though, i can't give you any figures. Checking something like Rent-A-Coder might give you a start, also, see if they're registered with Company house, and try and fit your bill to their wallet.

Oh, and good luck ;p

Edit: Also, don't forget your choices.

For support, either a wide-scoping package (Price for a year's limited support), or a per-hour charge. The hourly charge is less attractive to them, and the yearly one less attractive to you.

Remember to be very clear in billing aswell. If you're modifying existing code, charge them for a license for your current software, and the price of the mod.

If they want it ported, charge them for full development costs.

Just depends really on how long each project options 1,2,3 will take, ask for something around £15 - £20 per hour at least.

I can't give you any figures on software development, but on the support side you and the client need to decide on whether it's going to be year long based support or per incident based support.

What kind of software is this? How complex is the software? How big is the company? How many licenses are they using? This all factors into how much support should cost.

Many companies charge many different prices, we develop in C#, doing buisness systems and we charge by the day:

£375 Developer Day
£400 Manager Day

£40 per hour support.

edit:

For example, when I work for a day, it costs the client 375 pounds. (the time frame will be agreed before hand, and often say about 3 months etc.) And when my manager works for a day, the client pays £400 a day.

Developer mostly does the development with very little system design, and the manager price includings specing up the system etc.

(if i do the system spec, i charge the higher rate)

Hope this helps! =/

edit:

So thats about £46 per hour for a dev :)
