It's been done before and people usually lose interest after a couple of weeks. Most of the time the rules of the contest are bent or sometimes even broken and the voting systems have mostly been flawed. It's always worth another try though and I'm willing to help out in these two areas (rules and voting but rules especially since a lot of the past contest's rules have really got my goat) if you like.
EDIT: In addition to the above I'd like to add that there aren't that many people on LOMCN who make signatures. A SOTW contest might bring a few out of the woodwork though.

Maybe select some judges (say 3) that don't do graphics pieces but know what looks good and what doesn't.
And signature of the month would have a larger audience participation.

No, this is precisely why a judging system using the method you've outlined wouldn't work. People only know what looks good to themselves and unless they are knowledgeable in the field they're judging, they may not know why something looks good. Most of the signatures I see on here are nice in an "Oh, that looks nice" or "I see what s/he's trying to do, good job" way but, technically speaking, they're absolute crap. For a judging system you need people who are knowledgeable in the chosen field. On another forum that I'm a member of, they run a monthly photograph contest on a chosen subject, the judges are either professional photographers or at a professional level. They know what they're looking for and what separates a good image from an outstanding image.Pebble said:
