Suggestion, catch up mechanic.

Give an EXP bonus based on your rank on the leaderboard.

For example, if your rank 2000, give a 20% bonus If your rank 1000 give a 10% bonus. (This is an example value, this should be calculated, I just picked an arbitrary number.)

New starters on the server will see a big boost to let them catch up and it will help reduce the gap between the regular joes and the grinders with minimal impact on balance.

I actually quite like this idea, I mean it doesn't take entirely long to level as it is. An there is the odd person willing to help you it would surpass the 10-20% you'd be given lol.
