I don't really like using iTunes, I listen to music with Winamp. But having an iPhone I use iTunes to sync my phone and create ringtones, this is how I do it;

1. Open iTunes and go to Edit > Preferences.

2. Under "General", click "Import Settings..."
2.png

3. Change the "Import Using:" drop-down option to MP3 (or to AAC for an iPhone ringtone)
4. Click OK on both windows open, go back to iTunes
5. Go to the song you want to cut (& convert) and find the time of the part you want the song to start and/or finish.

6. Right click the song & press Get Info

7. Go to the "Options" tab and change the "Start Time" and the "Stop Time" if necessary (iPhone ringtones must be 40 seconds or less)
8. Click OK
9. Right click the song again and press "Create MP3 Version" or ("Create AAC Version" for iPhone)
5.png

10. This will add another song to your library which will be shorter, right click that song and click "Show in Windows Explorer"

11. There is your new MP3 file, which will start at the point you chosen, and you can use it as a ringtone.

12. Go back to iTunes and change the "Start Time" on your original song back to 00:00 (Just untick the box) - (Step 6 & 7)
13. You can also remove the shorter MP3 (Your ringtone) from your library. Optional.

---iPhone ONLY---
14. Once you have created the AAC version and have it open in Windows Explorer (Step 10) you have to change the extention from m4a to m4r.

15. Then just drag that m4r file into iTunes and it will appear in the "Ringtones" section, then just drag & drop onto your iPhone and it will sync!

Hope this helps people, any questions just ask them here.

When you say create ringtones, what do you mean exactly?

As in, create your own ringtone from scratch?
Or use a tune from iTunes as your ringtone?

Oh sweet, cutting out everything but the chorus could come in handy - though I just have a song as ringtone tbh.

Nice one.

Nope, iTunes is and always has been free.

It's the iTunes Store in which you have to pay for stuff (music, videos, apps, etc)

You can use it with whatever music you have just drag & drop it into your library. Although I do much much much prefer to use Winamp but I use iTunes to manage my iPhone.

Yep you can, any music...

Winamp is a music player. One of the (the best imho) best music players at that.

www.winamp.com

I take it you're still using WMP? >.>
