land ladys a ***** n wont give me any help sayin its all provided by the isp etc. so phoned the ip n guy goes its my firewall(disabled it to see if it was my firewall blockin everything but its not). he also said they dont block any ports and they r not usin a proxy..sum dns cache or sumthin(sorry bit of a n00b). also when i look up my ip on ipconfig it is different to the ip when i look at whatismyip.com. soooooo not sure what 2 do any help would be appreciated.

in my experience the internet provided at halls of residence is filtered beyond belief. you have a LAN connection to the university server and share the internet connection that the rest of the uni use. whatever blocks are in place in uni to stop you filesharing and playing online games, will also be in effect on the internet at your halls.

they dont block ports other than those never used by anythin other than p2p shares and games. u prob have an assigned ip thru the uni connection, a network ip and a machine ip so that wouldbe why theres a difference in uipconfig and whatismyip.com.

if sum1 can remember what ports mir uses, i think its 21 and somethin else, then you can ask them to check and unblock those specifically. prob get told no tho.

there are "advanced" ways of getting round it, i experimented with no success, but ssh tunelling is a term sometimes voiced that mite help. If someone with more knowledge about such things could yell up, i think that info may help quite a few people.

k was just askin around in the hallz reception where the net connection was advertised (provided by ask4 if that makes a difference) it says surf at high speeds(blah blah blah) enjoy online gaming. so im guessin we're not banned from playin online games in the halls. also we had 2 pay for the net in halls ourself whereas we were always able 2 connect to the uni internet just by tapppin in our student id. also another halls of residence also uni owned uses a different isp provder so are u sure that halls of residence normally share the univeristy internet connection?

thanx leo, back at home for the weekend now will give that a shot when i go back. will that work with mir 1.5+? or even woool?

thanx guys 4 the responses. much appreciated :)
