You probably won't be able to take an I3

i3 is a totally new socket that your laptop won't have. Best you can do is probably upgrade to a Core 2 Quad or a better Core 2 Duo!

It's really just finding out what socket your motherboard supports and if your motherboard supports the processors

Download http://www.cpuid.com/softwares/cpu-z.html and post a screenshot of the CPU and Mainboard tabs.

Also, the CPU you posted will not fit. That is a desktop socket. Your motherboard is socket P.

If you are looking to upgrade, it will need to be something like a P8700 (2.53 GHz Dual Core) or Q9000 (2 GHz Quad Core). Also, you need to make sure your laptop can handle the increased heat of a quad core cpu.

In my humble opinion, upgrading your laptop CPU will be very expensive and the performance increase will not warrant what it costs.. Might as well save for a faster laptop (and sell your current one) or upgrade your desktop.

Ye ive been looking at processors, and they cost alot few only 0.2-0.3 xtra Ghz lol. Not worth it i dont think. Need a new desktop pc as it goes, so may aswell go down that line. Anyone know a good website for pc ? Dont want to spend more than 350, want atleast 3ghz and 2 gig ram, hard drive/dvd drives dnt matter i have a mate with loads :)

Hazuki and Skyline have some recommendations in this thread: http://www.lomcn.co.uk/forum/showthread.php?71764-Computer-Components

Also, I wouldn't even consider building a desktop today without at least 4GB of memory (unless it's for a specific use).

I am not sure about pricing in the UK, but here the i3-2100 is a fantastic CPU in terms of cost/performance. If you don't want to spend that much on a CPU, you could always buy a Intel Pentium G series CPU (socket 1155) and upgrade later on to an i5.

Alternatively, if you just want to build it and get it over with, an AMD Phenom II X3 should be in a lower price range than an i3 (socket 1155).

Be aware though, AMD's new "bulldozer" CPU's are coming out before the end of the year. This may reduce the price of the current Phenom II series processors (but more importantly probably offer a new, bottom end CPU that will probably be faster than anything at it's debut price point). So, unless you are pressed to buy something now, I'd start saving and get yourself something around October or so that is a high performance to cost ratio.
